“I didn't think we would get caught in this downpour.” Kagome pushed the hanyou's soaking hair over his shoulder, repositioning herself against his back as he spirited them through the branches of the forest back to the village. “I'm sorry, Inuyasha.”
“S'kay,” he gripped her thighs, giving her a reassuring squeeze, something he usually did, his focus quickly returning to maneuvering through the trees. “It's not that much farther. Think you can make it?”
She nodded weakly, closing her eyes and burying her face against Inuyasha's wet collar, “I'm cold.”
“Just hold on. Miroku and Sango will have a fire going when we get back,” Inuyasha gently nudged her head with his. Kagome pressed her nose against his neck, nuzzling against his skin there in response, her warm breath an obvious distraction. One he did not need not as he took a precarious leap.
He realized he would fall short a split second before it happened. He rolled into there decent, transitioning Kagome as they plummeted through the branches rapidly toward the ground, his mate screaming as they clung to each other.
Gravity was unforgiving and the fall was painful as was the impact. Luckily, Kagome had not been injured.
Having the wind knocked from his body, Inuyasha gulped for air, his arms tightly woven around Kagome as she wiggled to get free, her sobbed mantra of his name in time with the thrum of the downpour. A streak of lightning tore across the sky, illuminating everything for a burst of a second that faded just as quickly, followed closely by a crack of thunder.
“Inuyasha! Inuyasha! Are you okay?!” Kagome sobbed, slipping to her knees in the mud as she searched blindly over his form with her hands, “Inuyasha, please be okay!”
“Keh. Would you quiet down,” he mumbled, finding his voice, gripping her arm and pulling her against him. His free hand cradled her head gently, but fiercely, his clawed fingers burying into her wet locks as he guided her mouth to his. She gasped at the contact, yet the familiarity had her calming under his touch as they kissed, the rain continuing to pelt down onto them.
When he released her so that he could sit up, she was fussing over him again. All he did was swat her hands, chuckling, “Did you forget, silly?” He cupped her cheek to quieten her. He knew she couldn't see him in the dim light with her human vision, but he could make out every single worried feature her face wore. He thumbed the corner of her lips, drawing her bottom lip from between her teeth, he kissed the top of her head then her nose, before leaving a chaste kiss on her lips.
“Hanyou, remember?” He gave her a lopsided smirk, which was lost on her in the dark. He stood, his robes stuck to him from the rain and dirt as he helped Kagome up to her feet, steadying her in the mud. “Let's head back to the village. Gotta get you dry.”
She nodded and slowly climbed onto his offered back, “Only if you are sure you're all right?”
“Of course, dummy,” he repositioned her, gave her thigh a quick squeeze for her reassurance.
This time, he didn't take to the trees.
