He was waken abruptly, the night still stretching on and morning not far off. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and turned to the source of what had woken him.
Ed stared at the woman who had captured his heart, her perfect visage twisted in the throes of another nightmare. With concerned eyes, Ed shifted in the bed, pulling his sleeping wife against his chest, cradling her in a protective hold as he brushed damp blonde wisps of hair from her cheek.
“Winry,” he whispered, pressing his lips to her soft skin as she whimpered unsettling in her sleep, her body working up to a fight, yet being so powerless to move from the weight of her dream.
“Winry, it’s just a nightmare.” Ed tightened his hold on her, burying his face against her neck, “Come back to me. I’m here, I’ll protect you.”
Slowly her stiff struggles loosened and her whimpering ceased. Edward smiled against her neck, pressing gentle kisses there, pulling her against him tightly.
“Everything will be fine,” he whispered, not wishing to wake her, but just hoping his voice would soothe her unsteady sleep even just a little.
They laid there for a long time, the morning dawn peeking over the horizon and filling the bedroom with a warm light. Ed continued to stroke his hand down Winry’s back, knowing that her sleep had finally calmed, hopefully for the more pleasant than the scariest.
Inhaling her honey scent laced with the ever present machine oil, Ed closed his eyes and hoped he too could get back to sleep, if only for another hour before Winry forced him awake.
Drifting back to sleep with a smile across his features, Ed’s light snores joined Winry’s as the early birds began singing their songs to the hillside.
