As Aobh knows, I have pet projects that I think up from time to time.
My latest one is to make a HTPC (Home Theatre PC). We have 3 machines in the house currently. My machine, Aobhs, and her old P3 machine. Now that we've moved house we actually have the use of all the rooms, so we have a huge sitting room downstairs with the TV in it.
The plan is this:
- To setup the 3rd PC downstairs, with XP Pro
- Connect the PS2 to the RF input of the TV card
- Connect the Sky digibox to the S-Video input of the TV card, and into the Line in of the sound card
- Setup the Sky digital remote control to remote control the PC and all apps via my universal IR reciever I have
- Setup an HTPC program such as myHTPC to launch various programs
- Hook up my PSX-USB adaptor to play games (see below)
- Hook up a serial cable to the Sky digibox to support channel changing
I will use it for:
- Watching Movies, both DVDs and AVIs on DVD/CD
- Playing music
- Playing games via ePSXe, VisualBoyAdvance, Project64, Chankast etc
Eventually I'll want to add an 11g WiFi card to connect to the other 2 computers in the house so that I can play videos directly across the network.
So far all I've done is setup the PC downstairs, format and install a basic XP installation, load the drivers and the DVD software. I still have to configure myHTPC and setup TV viewing, plus all the apps.
I'll also need to grab some cables to connect everything, as well as make the PC as quiet as possible (right now it's quite loud)
Once it's all done we'll be able to watch movies and anime without having to sit upstairs in front of the PC, while still having the Sky and PS2 - all through a single connection point.
:)
