Above freezing...

...and about damn time.  There are icicles as thick as my wrist hanging off the neighbors' house, our utility bill was over $300 last month, I haven't seen the surface of the driveway in weeks, and the water in the dog bowls has been frozen solid since mid-January (though their poop freezes too which makes cleaning the yard easier).

Got nothing done at work yesterday as got sidetracked into vigorous discussion on a professional listserv I belong to regarding whether said professional organization ought to take a formal position on California's Prop 8, which has precisely nothing to do with said profession.   The discussion evolved into whether or not professional organizations in general had any business taking formal positions on issues entirely unrelated to them; e.g., the American Bartenders' Association issuing a position statement on animal cruelty, or PETA issuing a position statement on the preferred percentage of Wild Turkey in a Perfect Manhattan.  Amazingly, discussion remained civil.  Perhaps there is hope for America after all.

Must get to work on workshop story for February.  I'm torn between a comedy a la Terry Pratchett in which gravity, feeling unappreciated, decides to take a holiday, and a vampire story with a twist.  Decisions, decisions...

professional organizations, silliness, writing
