Supernatural 4.02 "Are You There God? It's Me, Dean Winchester"

This episode really got me wondering about some stuff which I think is a good thing.
And then I started to wonder... spoilers up to and including 4.02 )

This brings me to another point that I’ve been wondering about for awhile. Bobby says he has information on angels written in cuneiform. How does Bobby know how to read cuneiform? For that matter it’s been implied that Bobby has other books written in languages besides English and Latin. Where did Bobby learn these languages? It isn’t like the local community college is going to offer a course in Akkadian or Egyptian for Beginners.

I have a pet theory where Bobby was either a medieval, classics, or linguistics professor before he became a junkyard-owning, panic room-building, shotgun-toting, plaid-wearing hunter. Someday I'm actually going to write the fic where he was excited to be accepted onto the tenure track at the local university and Mrs. Bobby got a job doing whatever Mrs. Bobby did and then it all went to hell when she got possessed and Bobby started stabbing her with kitchen knives.

I really love this theory. It makes so much sense. We don't know what Bobby did before he became a hunter but a classical/linguistics prof makes sense. He has to have gotten that specialized education from somewhere and it's not like he's online checking translateancientakkadian.com all the time.

Plus the other thing is that books like that don't come cheap so I figure that Bobby must have a fair amount of cash tucked away. Given the implied size of his library he'd have needed to be collecting for a long time. Rare volumes in dead languages don't just come up for sale everyday after all. If you ever write the fic I'd love to read.

*random drop-in from the newsletter*

You read my mind on a lot of these - salt+iron=rust (though the concept itself is very cool) and I too was wondering why they didn't just build a fire right there.

And as I was drooling over Bobby's library, I was wondering how he got them. Is there a Hunter who collects books instead of cases? Because that is one serious collection (and no library stickers to be seen! Bobby doesn't strike me as the library-card type anyway)

But this pet theory gets two thumbs up. If it was borne out of a home office of a professor, it makes much more sense.

But as for Sam sleeping on the floor, I was wondering if it was because the library was the most fortified place (in terms of ghosts, etc) in the house - because those windows were blown in, it must have been cold and uncomfortable down there!

Is there a Hunter who collects books instead of cases? He could be the Book Hunter *g*

I hadn't thought of the library as fortified but now that you point it out it does seem a little obvious. That's the only room with the devils' traps and stuff painted in it I think.

Thank-you glad it was interesting. There is a lot of other stuff on angels and other heavenly entities but that was the really interesting part (read: the part I could see the show using) unlike angels being good at jail breaks which was fun but really relevant. I keep wondering if show will bring in seraphim since they can take away sin by putting a hot coal in a person's mouth. You know I think I'd want to be the research librarian of demon hunting...

Being Sam or Dean would be hard and besides those research types don't seem to die as young *g*

salt + iron = rust?
I had much the same thought, but decided not to fret about it. The episode is riddled with plot holes, really - far less well-structured than last week. Better to just focus on the awesome and not let the niggles get to you!

Now, in season 4, Ruby seems frail and frightened.
I think that while on the one hand she has been achieving some success with Sam - she has clearly wormed her way into his trust, and has him developing his powers, as she wanted - on the other hand, she has slid quite a way down the pecking order this season. Lilith bested her pretty comprehensively in NRFTW. Sam's new powers mean she has little or nothing to hold over him - she is entirely reliant on his trust and good will. He could send her back to hell at once if he turned against her. And she is as afraid of the angel bringing Dean back as all the other demons. So...yeah, I think she has definitely lost a lot of confidence since last season. It'll be interesting to see where they are going with this.

While I like that Sam isn’t as angst ( ... )

I know but I'm terrible for getting caught up in the little niggles. It's part of the show's charm as far as I'm concerned.

That's a really interesting take on Ruby's situation and I haven't heard it before. Now that you point it out though it does seem really obvious. Given Sam's apparent new powers she's basically teaching him how to kill her own kind so I agree that unless she's got a trump card she's reliant on his good will.

Angels are not exclusively Judeo/Christian/Islamic. You can find winged servants in many religions and anyway Angels are thought to be borrowed from the Zoroastrian religion. If we do go J/C/I mythos then we know that there were two falls Satan and the Angels that followed him and later the Grigori, angels who came down to earth to teach man and ended up by being corrupted by their lust for mortal women. Azazel (YED) is according to legend to be one of the leaders of the Grigori and we know in the Supernatural universe he had two demonic (nephilim children). So all Demons are fallen angels, yes even those who were once human as we know according to legend that humans have become Angels, most notably Enoch and Elijah who became Metatron and Sandephal

Whoops, I didn't mean to say they were, just that those were the only kind of angel that I looked at. Thanks for pointing that out.
