I got a baby bunny today.
I'd been thinking about a new pet for some time. Then, I went to the Massachusetts sheep and wool festival and saw the bunnies from a local farm. I fell in love, but managed enough restraint not to buy one then and there (Katy was not with me). So, I talked to Katy, called the farm, set up an appointment, drove out to Taunton this morning and picked out my bunny.
He's a satin angora. His color is called tortoiseshell--he's a pretty, bright orange color all along his top, and then a lighter mottled gray/brown color toward his underside. He had three siblings the same coloring, but he was the brightest and prettiest of them. He's still very young (6 weeks I think? I'd have to check the papers). I don't have a name yet (if anyone is familiar with my difficulty naming things, you know this may take awhile), and I am taking suggestions if anyone (except Ellie) wants to offer them.
Just kidding, Ellie. I like your names sometimes.
Once we brought him home, Katy and I put him in the carrier that we used for Josie and Julie with some food and water, and then went to Target to get materials for a temporary(?) cage. I used metal cubes (like those Katy had for shelving in college--Cassie remembers, I'm sure) held together with cable ties, and then put a vinyl shower curtain covered with newspapers on the floor (he's too young to be fully litterbox trained). I built it myself, as Katy is working now. I'm very, very proud. When I finished, I let him roam around and explore a little bit. He's settling in very nicely--he's not really shy at all.
I took a ton of pictures, and will probably post some in the coming days.
Also, I think we created a monster.
This little guy is pedigreed. Katy and I are thinking I might try showing him--satin angoras are a fairly rare breed, and the breeder said that it would do good to get more rabbits out there going to shows. I think it will be a good experience, so I might try. Eventually, if he wins a couple shows, I could get him registered--and breed him to perpetuate (and improve--that's what it's all about) the breed. I could then either collect a stud fee, or take pick of the litter.
Katy's also thinking about getting a rabbit to show--something other than an angora, like a mini lop or a rex.
Does this sound foreboding? There may be more rabbits in our future, if we do well keeping up with the ones we have.
It's very telling that I think baby bunny poops are one of the cutest things I've ever seen.
Now, I should stop and go sit with J & J. They need love, too, even though they don't like me sometimes.
