Several days ago marks my one year anniversary of unemployment, but since several days ago I've also had two job interviews. Also, a recruiter contacted me for something I've been looking into to, but we'll see how that goes.
In more interesting news, I made it to the last chapter of my novel. As it is now, it will be chapter 25 of the novel. I haven't done a word count since I won NaNoWriMo in November, but I do know it is over 50000 words for sure. Since it's not meant to be a part of a series, I decided not to write an epilogue. Although, perhaps this is a bit of the influence from Japanese media coming through, I have to admit the ending leaves room for more books in a series. While I'm excited enough to finish the novel, I'm not so confident to believe that it would be popular enough to warrant direct sequels. However, I'd love to expand on the world I've created in my next novel with different characters and a new narrative. When I was writing, I had these crazy dreams every night that gave me ideas. I won't use all of them, but several fit in well enough with the world to put into my next novel.
I'm actually looking forward to editing this. I think I make a better editor than writer. It's not that my spelling and grammar are perfect. It's that I can finally look at my story as a whole and make adjustments to change things as I see fit. I can do this page by page or chapter by chapter with my new notes. I'm a lot better at improving things than inventing them, so in a sense, perhaps writing the story is the biggest challenge for me.
As for my notes, I'm still thinking about how I should organize them. I'm a horrible artist, but I can describe what I see in words well. I'm going to try to draw the maps and several buildings to represent the setting with some notes under them. While the world is big, my story only takes place in three different settings, one of which is represented by only 2 chapters. The others are split almost evenly, which wasn't my intention but it worked out pretty well. I think I'll do all my notes by hand instead of typing them up on the computer. It's a lot easier for me to refer to something tangible as I do my work on the computer. My changes are going to be dramatic. I'll be changing names and whole personalities. I may even decide to turn the setting upside down. The economy needs an overhaul, and I'll need to create some real motivations for the characters. I haven't decided yet whether I want to go 100% science fiction or 100% fantasy -- most of the novels I read mix them up. If I go science fiction, I believe my novel would have more value to the readers. But it would also require a lot more research on my part. If I go fantasy, then I run in danger of being influenced too heavily by other media or breaking the threshold of what's believable. I also think that I can write fantasy to be more entertaining than science fiction. And when all is said and done, I want to entertain my readers. So, yeah, I may have written a story, but without some great notes and a monstrous amount of editing it is pure crap.
Well, that's about it for now. I've got a feeling something good is going to happen soon. Till later!
