Wonderful Last Night

Happiness is sitting in Madison Square Garden, seeing Eric Clapton live for the first time on two tickets your daughter gave you for Christmas after you'd decided not to get yourself tickets due to the high price, and listening to your son seated next to you signing along with, not only the big hits, but some lesser-known ones to which you didn't even know the lyrics.  Best Christmas present ever!  Thank you, Christina, for those tickets.  Thank you, Austin, for being such a cool person with whom to see concerts.

Opening act Jimmie Vaughan, and second opening act Gary Edwards, Jr., were terrific. Wish I'd gotten to see Vaughan play when he was younger, but I walked away with two new artists into whose work I can now delve.

Clapton, of course, was Clapton. Smooth playing. Totally cool demeanor. Yes, there was little interaction with the audience (just the requisite "thank you" after each song). No blustering, rambling stories between songs. No scripted banter. Just Eric, his guitars and his band, playing the set, one song into the next, and blowing us away. Great use of large screens to focus on Eric's hands and movements (Austin, a guitar player himself, was on the edge of his seat).

And yes, we got home after midnight.
