Upon arriving back in Olympia I was introduced to Tent City. A homeless encampment in the center of Olympia in opposition of a new law that states no one can stand or sit anywhere in the city of Olympia for longer then 7 minutes along with specific Panhandling and Spanging rules meant to make it that much more difficult for the poor and homeless to survive or transition comfortably.
A lot of the campers at Tent City have jobs and are just needing a safe transitional place where they can live temporarily.
This encampment is amazing people. Everyone has shelter, food, community; everyone takes care of everyone. We have cooks, craftsmen, carpenters, the occasional musician etc.
This place has been so amazing to me in my situation and also just for the experience.
However the police threatened us all this afternoon telling us we all needed to leave. In a four hour period of time they ticketted Cameron's van TWICE for illegal parking. There's a city council meeting going on right now regarding these issues and many Tent City campers and supporters standing by at the camp waiting for whatever is going to happen.
p.s. tent city is on columbia st. between state and fourth.. you are welcome to stand beside us!
