My general political philosophical stance is somewhat idiosyncratic, I'd say. I believe in some government involvement in certain areas, particularly infrastructure and certain essential public services, like, as you say, health-care and public schooling.

I am a proponent of diversity, but in an ideal world, considering we have done our rounds on Plato's Republic recently, I'd have to say that politics as a whole is too focused on government and power. The ideal government would contain people not necessarily in it to make a name for themselves, but rather ruling out of a sense of patriotic duty, no matter how weird that may sound.

With the power focus and the "rabid watchdog" of the press (perhaps not as much in Norway, but in the US and UK to the extremes) comes the focus on personality and backstories and track records that scares me about US political life. When your home town, family and/or level of patriotism (i.e. military history) is more important than your health-care plan, if any, you might be wrong for elected office.

I enjoy the political discussions, and I look forward to hearing your view on the Republicans vs. Democrats issue!
