I took the car in November for a smog check, which it passed on emission and not due to timing. So because I had to go to a Smog-Only Test Center, I was able to apply to the California Consumer Assistance Program
http://www.smogcheck.ca.gov/stdpage.asp?Body=/Consumer/cap_program.htm and get some money to fix the far. When they got it they found the timing belt was torn bad and parts of the engine had melded together. Long story short-it would cost 3x more to fix the car than it cost when I first purchased it. *sigh* I got it home from the mechanics more or less in one piece but it made this horrible wrenching noise as I drove it home.
I knew it had one last trip in it so I hadn't been driving it for the last couple of months. I tried selling it for parts on Craigslist but got no takers. I'd been procrastinating on getting rid of it, but last wednesday I drove it one last time to the auto dismantler (fyi: they are shying away from using the term "junk yard) and got $50.00 for all my happy memories and independence.
My friends and classmates have been great about giving me rides, my roommates even let me use their spare beater car when I have to drive to Sac for school stuff, but I realize I'm not fond of being dependent on others and I really *miss* being able to take off whenever I needed to, to run errands and such.
Good bye to my little car.
Now onto the next saga, getting a new-old car with the least amount of hassle and for a decent price...
