prevent planting of genetically engineered alfalfa

Jul 13, 2010 12:40

The following is my own analysis, not just some cut and paste deal.

Monsanto's genetically engineered "round-up resistant" alfalfa has been banned from being planted by the US Supreme Court but the USDA has been given oversight for this matter and is permitted to approve a planting if it wishes to do so.

Once the gene pool is polluted with modified genes, there's no going back, Pandora's box will have been opened once again, and the natural diversity and integrity of our ecosystems will irreversibly damaged. The modified genes will be transmitted to the normal alfalfa through cross-pollination and eliminate hybrid plants from being classified as "organic", thus compromising sources of seed for organic feeds for organically raised cattle etc as well as obligating farmers found with these hybrids to pay Monsanto for possessing plants with the gene. That's why planting this GMO alfalfa has been banned as well as health risks from its consumption.

Round-up is Monsanto's post-emergent herbicide, is toxic to all plants, the insects and animals that feed on treated plants, and there is increasing evidence that these modified genes can be incorporated into the genomes of bacteria residing within their hosts (us humans as well as insects and other animals). Round-up is also an endocrine disruptor and carcinogen. GMO alfalfa can be treated with massive amounts of round-up without having its growth inhibited and the resultant alfalfa will contain very high amounts of round-up within and upon itself.

Please read the following link and sign a petition to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack asking that he support the ban by refraining to approve any variances to the US Supreme Court's ruling against Monsanto. Please re-post this link where it will be viewed by friends.
