Hardboiled & Hard Luck

How are we able to handle the death of good friends?

Couldn't it end also our (known) life?

Banana Yoshimoto describes in this novel two young women, who are confrontated with the death.

In the first story the femal narrator hikings to a little town where mysterious things are happening:

A creepy shrine, a sudden fire in a restaurant, and a dead young woman in her hotel room. There appeares also the ghost of a former lover in her dreams. She has never been able to cry about her death, but now she has to let go...

In „Hard Luck“ another young woman has to think about her life: Her sister is going to die.

She has to watch how Kuni's brain stops working - and she has to say goodbye to be able to live on.

This book is hard to describe, because it consists of a lot of thoughts and memories and it made me sad. But it's really worth reading: I enjoyed it.

And in all that melancholy there is also hope ^^
