Colonisation

It's official. I have geckos in my house.

It was just the other weekend when one fell out of the roof via the ventilation fan and was discovered lying on the bathroom sink.

I admired briefly the golden eyes and soft translucent fawn skin with its lacy shadow dapples, then went to fetch a takeaway container to carry it outside. It wouldn't move to the prod of a finger; either playing dead or just stunned, I assumed. I didn't want it to drop its tail, so I carefully picked it up around the middle to place it in the plastic container.

I was completely unprepared for the gecko's indignant fury. It twisted in my hand and nipped me sharply on the side of a finger. I dropped it with a startled thunk into the container, where it hissed and squawked at me, glaring and lashing its tail in outrage. TigerEyes promptly deposited it outside as I collapsed uselessly in a fit of giggles. How terrifyingly cute!

And last night I was awakened at 3am by Dervish scrabbling and quacking at the foot of the bed. After she refused to desist despite a thrown stuffed rabbit, I sat up and turned on the light. Hidden in the rumpled quilt end on the floor was a small, stunned gecko, tail stump just stopped bleeding. This one seemed truly stunned, as it took almost a minute in my hand before it moved slightly, twitching. I took it outside and put it on a wall, then went back in to try an sooth the excited kitty. I had to laugh, watching her intently waiting for the Magic Bed to produce another multilegged toy.

I like geckos.
