So since recently I've been writing quite a bit of Bucky and Steve feels, I collated some music together that I associate with them, makes me think of them.
And in there, I put all sorts of chart-topping, guilty-pleasure pop songs, because I am me, and I don't really know many indie rock bands, so I make do, and you know what? I think it works!
I have no art or anything for it, I just wanted to share.
1. Stare At The Sun - Thrice
2. We Found Love - Rihanna & Calvin Harris
3. Too Close - Alex Clare
4. Here's To You - Union Sound Set
5. Part Of Me - Katy Perry
6. I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz
7. Breathe Me - Sia
8. Who Knew - P!nk
9. Swing Life Away - Rise Against
10. Who You Are - Jessie J
11. You Found Me - The Fray
12. Heartlines - Florence + The Machine
13. Meet Me At My Funeral - Brigade
14. Walk In The Sun - McFly
I have a Spotify playlist of this if you're interested in any way.
The two of you that might be interested by my thoughts about this, here goes...
1. Stare At The Sun - Thrice
Thrice? Okay, mostly because of the lines 'I'm due for a miracle/I'm waiting for a sign' and also 'Do I trust my heart or just my mind'. It's desperation, Bucky clinging to something he wants to happen, his confusion when Steve comes back into his life. There are a few songs on that theme in this mix XD.
2. We Found Love - Rihanna & Calvin Harris
We Found Love, well, I don't know. It just hit me once that 'we found love in a hopeless place' relates so well to Steve and Bucky, who friendship and companionship and love during the hard times of the war, and never really knew anything better.
3. Too Close - Alex Clare
I know that this song is a breakup song. But somehow I found the lyrics to fit them so, so well. I mean, the whole thing. 'You know I'm not one to break promises / I don't want to hurt you but I need to breathe / At the end of it all, you're still my best friend/But there's something inside that I need to release / Which way is right, which way is wrong' It just struck me.
4. Here's To You - Union Sound Set
I can't even, with this song. 'I'm not scared, just not prepared' sounds like something Steve would say, and there's a whole arc about changing, and 'I'm not what I was then but it's then that I knew you', and it talks to me about them SO MUCH.
5. Part Of Me - Katy Perry
Right, there we go, a poppy explosion of auto-tuned vocals and basic beats. I do like me some Katy Perry, I'll admit, and this song actually makes me think about Bucky, reflecting on himself and Steve. 'This is the part of me that you never gonna take away from me' is like Bucky telling the Winter Soldier that Steve is this part of him he'll never get to touch.
6. I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz
Going on with the pop, a little Jason Mraz moment, because I do love him a lot. Why this song in particular? Because it speaks of hardships and working through them, it talks of unconditional love. I especially love the bridge - 'I don't wanna be someone who walks away so easily / I'm here to stay and make the difference that I can make / Our differences they do a lot to teach us how to use / The tools and gifts we got yeah, we got a lot at stake / And in the end, you're still my friend at least we did intend / For us to work we didn't break, we didn't burn / We had to learn how to bend without the world caving in'. It screams them, to me.
7. Breathe Me - Sia
This song is my go-to song when a character is broken in any way. Bucky is broken in the now, Steve used to be in the 40's, before the super serum. And these lyrics, the flow of this song fits both of them. 'Be my friend / Hold me, wrap me up / Unfold me / I am small / I'm needy / Warm me up / And breathe me'. I love the atmosphere of this song, most of all; the way Sia breathes through it.
8. Who Knew - P!nk
Another poppy moment, yes. But seriously if listening to this song while thinking about Steve doesn't hit you in the gut, then I don't know anymore. 'If someone said three years from now / You'd be long gone / I'd stand up and punch them out / Cause they're all wrong / I know better / Cause you said forever / And ever'. It is such a desperate song, it just works for me, really well.
9. Swing Life Away - Rise Against
I love this song. To be fair, I love this band, so I always try to sneak them in my playlists XD. This song, though, it feels like dialogue between Steve and Bucky, at times. 'Am I still your charm, or am I just bad luck? / Are we getting closer, or are we just getting more lost? / I'll show you mine if you show me yours first / Let's compare scars, I'll tell you whose is worse / Let's unwrite these pages and replace them with our own words'. And I want them to swing life away so bad.
10. Who You Are - Jessie J
It's another one of these songs that make sense for Bucky's train of thoughts for me. 'I stare at my reflection in the mirror: / "Why am I doing this to myself?" / Losing my mind on a tiny error, /I nearly left the real me on the shelf.' It's a little desperate and it's a lot hopeful for better times, which I like to think Bucky yearns for.
11. You Found Me - The Fray
Somewhere, Steve finds Bucky, and it's not fucking perfect, it's fractured and fucked up, but at least, Steve found Bucky. I tend to completely overlook the references to God in this song, and cling to my thoughts of Steve and Bucky finding each other.
12. Heartlines - Florence + The Machine
It's not the only FatM I could associate with them, but it's one of these hopeful ones. I like to think of them using each other as a map to find their way home, and this is the way I chose to interpret this song when it comes to them. 'Still I follow heartlines on your hand. / And there’s fantasy, there’s fallacy, there’s tumbling stone. / Echoes of a city that’s long overgrown. / Your heart is the only place that I call home, / I cannot be returned.'
13. Meet Me At My Funeral - Brigade
This is not a song for the good times, nor is it hopeful. But it's one of my all time favourite songs, and it works for them; a constant fight between who Bucky is, and who Steve wants him to be, and what getting his memories back could do to his heart and mind. 'And if the whistle blows who / Will know that I've been left for dead / You wanna help me / You wanna drag me back / My open heart, instead you'd meet me at my funeral / Now is the time so / Give everything you have / It's not enough though I hope to see you at my funeral'
14. Walk In The Sun - McFly
This is a song that means a WHOLE lot to me, for a varied number of reasons, and the fact that I associate it with Bucky might very well only be my own mind. But I like to think about it with the idea of a Bucky that is slowly coming to terms with himself, who he was where he's going what he's doing in this new life for him. Trying to figure it out.
So there you have it. If you have any Steve/Bucky songs/explanations about songs/thoughts about these ones to share with me, please please please dooooooooo. I understand this entry is, SUPER BORING. I apologise.
In completely unrelated news: on Tuesday I passed probation at work so I'm a full part of the team now! Go me.
