Snippet - No Pairing - Pirates of the Caribbean

So, if you haven't seen the movie, this is both insanely spoilery and highly plot-dependent. So read it if you like, but it won't make sense until you've seen the film. Which I highly recommend. Because it ROCKS!

Breathing fast through his teeth, Will clambered up the hill to the chest. His boots slipped on the gold heaped up under his feet and he stumbled. Cursing under his breath, Will pushed himself up and stood. Below him, he could hear swords clanging as Jack and Barbosa fought their way closer. Elizabeth raced along the walkway toward them.

Will brought his sword up and laid it along his palm. This was going to hurt. Sucking in a fortifying breath, he bore down, slicing along the bottom of his hand. He pushed down until it started to burn and blood welled up around the blade. In the back of his mind, he hoped he didn’t cripple himself. His hands were his livelihood.

Will yanked free of the sword and fumbled with the chain around his neck. It slithered through his fingers. He groped a little further and closed his hand over the coin. Blood smeared across his chest.

Too deep, dammit. Too deep, he thought, tearing the coin free at last. From the corner of his eye, Will saw something fly towards him. He jerked around in time to snatch another blood-smeared coin from the air. Jack's.

Will looked up to find Jack facing Barbosa over slightly lowered swords. Hurriedly, Will clutched both coins in his wounded hand and held them over the chest. Barbosa suddenly drew his pistol. Will followed his aim to find Elizabeth poised taut and motionless.

A report roared through the cave, drying Will’s mouth, but Elizabeth merely gasped and stared. Looking back toward the dueling pair, Will found Jack holding a smoking pistol aimed straight at Barbosa’s heart. Jack raised his eyes to Will, glancing towards the coins. Will started to open his hand and stopped. Barbosa couldn’t die until Will dropped the coins.

Oh, God, Will thought wildly, Dad. Somewhere under the Carribean, Bootstrap Bill Turner still lived. And would as long as Will didn’t drop those coins. Will’s heart pounded in his ears. His father. Will held his father’s existence clutched in his hand along with Elizabeth’s life and Jack’s damnation. The world wavered. He could just keep the coins long enough to find his father. Jack claimed his father was a good pirate - a good man. He didn’t deserve to drown alone and forgotten and Will could save him.

Eyes stinging, Will focused on Jack again and saw that Jack knew. Jack knew. Jack had probably always known what breaking the curse would mean for Will and his father and had tossed him the coin anyway and was looking at him right now with something almost like sympathy in his eyes.

“You keep that pistol for ten years and now you waste your shot?” Barbosa’s laughing voice swam through Will’s ears as if bubbling up from a great depth.

“He didn’t waste it,” Will heard himself reply and felt Barbosa’s attention latch onto him.

Oh God, Dad. I’m sorry, Will thought. Will blinked once to clear the burning from his eyes and extended his arm rigidly over the chest again. He whispered an Ave for his father’s soul and let the coins fall.
