I just returned yesterday from a brief trip to Chapel Hill and the Outer Banks. In Chapel Hill, I attended a show at the Local 506, a small, slightly rundown place downtown with a shitty sound system. Daedelus, Busdriver and Antimc were performing, and apparently on a tour. I wasn't really sure what to make of Antimc - they played first - their music was sort of an electro-rock mish mash that I didn't find particularly inspiring. Daedelus, on the other hand, the artist I was there to see, entertained with just a Powerbook and some sort of light-touch grid that he was using to mix the music in real-time. Busdriver, a backpack rapper was spittin' pretty quick, and although I found it quite impressive, I ended up leaving while his performance was still ongoing. It was a small show, attended chiefly by hooded college students of the nearby university. Overall, there wasn't anything sensational about the show, but it's hard to go wrong at $10.
The following day, I drove to the outer banks so I would be able to have a decent night's rest for the half-marathon I'd be running the next day. Lady luck smiled upon me and provided a small lodging called the Atlantic Street Inn, a modest two story house that had no more than six or seven rooms in which to stay. It's located in Kill Devil Hills, and was only two miles or so from the start of the half-marathon, a perfect warm-up distance. The race began at 7am, and was host to 2171 runners, well over half of which were females, much to my pleasure. Although I expected to take well over two hours, as this was my first half-marathon, I ended up clocking in at 1:47:19.05, giving me an overall pace of 8:12 per mile, and putting me 247 overall and 23rd in the 20-24 age group for men. I'm fairly certain I've found my new favorite hobby, and I plan to continue to train and run a marathon fairly soon.
