Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 Review

Sooo, I finally saw Deathly Hallows pt 1 yesterday, and Oh. My. God! It was absolutely brilliant. So freaking amazing. I seriously wouldn't be able to express how much I loved that movie. I had some serious doubts as to whether they would finally make a winner or if it would be a flop like they've all been since PoA's major fail (GoF not included), but this film definitely surpassed all of my expectations.

I was teary-eyed right from the beginning, with the Dursley's packing up and leaving, and Hermione obliviating her parents. Moody's grumpiness was so funny, and yet so sad because I knew he was about to die. Hedwig's death, though, was just as poignant in the movie as it was in the book for me. I remember when I read that in the book, I thought, 'wow, if JKR can kill Hedwig, then no one is safe.'

Everyone meeting back up at the Burrow was very intense, but... When did they change the Burrow? It was weird, but not that big a deal... I was disappointed that they left the whole Bill/Fleur thing out of HBP, so for someone like my husband, the wedding came out of left field. And, I have to say, I was slightly disappointed that Viktor wasn't at the wedding to grumble about the deathly hallows symbol, but oh well.

I loved the scenes from the Ministry. The actors they got to play the polyjuiced Ministry workers were brilliant in their nervous jumpiness. Harry's line: You're lying, Dolores, and we must not tell lies. as he was transforming back into himself was just priceless. And Mr. Cattermole's wife kissing Ron was too funny. <3

The camping was wonderfully tense, and I was surprised that they managed to make it not as drawn out as it was in the books. Ron's exit did not disappoint, which leads me to... Is it just me or are there certain people on the team that made the movie happen that are Harry/Hermione shippers? Because I was getting a very H/Hr shippy vibe during that tent-dance. But it was very sweet and fun amidst all the scary unknown they were facing.

Godric's Hollow - uh, awesome! I thought they translated those scenes to the screen brilliantly, and the snake was very terrifying. Yes, I jumped when the snake jumped out at Harry and Hermione, even though I was expecting it. The retrieval of the sword from that pond was very exciting, though Mat commented that hypothermia should have set in and killed Harry, lol... I loved Hermione's reaction to Ron's return. In fact, I rather thought this was Emma Watson's best performance to date, and I didn't think I'd ever say that, as I'm not a fan of her acting.

Skipping forward to Malfoy Manor... And this was probably the most disappointing part of the movie. I'd rather hoped Bellatrix would be more evil, but that isn't what really disappointed me. They completely screwed up the escape from the dungeon. Wormtail was supposed to repay his life debt, but instead Dobby killed him. Oh well, at least he's dead.

And Dobby, poor Dobby. What an emotional death and burial scene :( Mat liked Dobby, and he said, "Why do they keep killing the characters I like? Does that mean if I start to like Harry, they'll kill him, too?"

I looked away and said, "No comment." To which he replied, "Yes! GO Harry!" *snerk*

All in all, I was very satisfied by Part 1, and I'm very much looking forward to Part 2... And it's made me want to reread the book! :)
