I have to say, I never liked Chibi Usa. It wasn't until I saw SKU and found Shiori that I disliked an anime character more. I guess some people think that the people or characters they like have a perspective similar to their own, and therefore like/dislike the same things as they do, even if that is not really true. The logic would be something like, "I am a smart person capable of making a reasonable judgment. I think Character A is annoying and I can't stand her. Characters B, C, and D are also smart people capable of making reasonable judgments, therefore they must also think Character A is annoying and can't stand her." She was important to the BSSM story and it would be impossible to remove or marginalize her without damaging the plot (and Usagi's character development), but DAMN the girl was annoying.
"Misconception," FYI, is about what might really happen if Usagi and Mamoru's child turned out not to be Chibiusa and was completely someone else. Angst galore. By general consensus it's my best story to date.
I'd read far too many stories where they have a different baby and are all "Oh, but that's okay! It's still a miracle! We love her/him anyway! On with life! What a relief to be released from the bonds of destiny!" Umm... HELLO? Chibiusa was their FRIEND. They loved her. They risked death to protect her. More than once. You don't just go "Oh well, she doesn't exist, who cares?" Stories like that drive me crazy. Good fanfic writers need to be able to prevent their own feelings and perpectives from tainting the characterizations of canon.
I do agree she was annoying, though, and it was rather enjoyable writing about her being gone. ;)
It's a lot like the "Michiru/Haruka are lesbians = EVIL" argument, where the same authors who make Haruka a man or break Michiru and Haruka up in order to pair them with men make Usagi/Seiya fics.
