"You wouldn't have liked it," Faye said bitterly. "It wasn't the same, with Spike gone." She looked away for a moment, and then her gaze flicked back to the red-haired girl.
"What happened to you?"
"Oh, a little of this, a little of that," was the airy reply. "I lived on my own again for a while, then went back to the children's shelter, wandered around, made friends and lost them and made some more...but then the worst thing happened. The absolute cruelest, most horrible thing ever."
"What was it?" Faye asked, dreading the answer. Rape? Assault? Kidnapping? Which of the world's many evils had finally taken this child's innocence?
Ed smiled wryly.
"I grew up."
