Lynndie England, the US soldier found guilty of inmate abuse at Abu Ghraib prison, has been sentenced to three years in jail.
She was pictured holding a leash, attached around the neck of a naked Iraqi inmate at Abu Ghraib prison in a scandal that prompted international outrage.
In addition to the custodial sentence, she was also given a dishonourable discharge.
She faced a maximum punishment of nine years behind bars. The military prosecution had asked the jury of five military officers for a sentence of four to six years; the defence had asked that she be spared any time behind bars.
Feh. I don't think it was harsh enough. If she was a civilian, she'd probably get just a bit more time behind bars. Then again, a dishonourable discharge from the military is nothing to sneeze at. It pretty much disqualifies you from doing anything that requires and level of trust ever again.
Discuss.
