Burked
Season 2
Episode #023
Chiggers. Paul Braun had several chigger bites on his chest (although we never found out how he got them there, as most chigger bites are on the legs) and Nick sustained several as well when he was on Braun's lawns. Chiggers are the larvae of the harvest mite, Trombicula alfreddugesi. This eight-legged adult mites are bright red and resemble small velvety spiders, and like to hang around soil. While the adults and immature stages are harmless, it's the six-legged larval stage that chews on animals and, when available, people, who usually suffer bites on the legs, or, when unfortunately because they sat down, on the crotch. Chiggers do not burrow into the skin, but instead pierce the epidermis and inject a fluid that prevents blood from clotting (similar to what mosquitoes do). This fluid causes inflammation, leaving behind a red welt with a hard center. It itches like heck.

I'm such a dork. 8)
