So, inspired by
clea2011 and
fififolle who are doing book reading bingo, and also
cordeliadelayne who is aiming to read 100 books this year (100!?!), I've decided to make a record of what I'm reading in 2017. I've never done this before so have no previous 'stats' to compare it to, but I think it will be interesting to see just how much, and what, I read over the course of a year

I did consider the bingo, but given that most of the books currently on my to-read pile are nearly all historical adventure fiction, or archaeology/ancient history non-fiction, I decided the bingo card with all it's variety would not actually be helpful in clearing the backlog!

I took a train journey over to Birmingham today and started reading my first book of 2017 while I was travelling. Somewhat unexpectedly, the first book I really fancied out of my to-read pile was a non-fiction about ancient Rome (as opposed to the epic stack of books about ancient Greece which is theoretically supposed to be my favourite of the two!).

I do that a lot, which is why this year I'm taking the next one off my to-read pile no matter what it is - some of them have been on the piles for years, I'll never make a dent in it otherwise!

That's probably a good idea with the to-read pile. I alternate between phases of reading fiction and non-fiction, and I very much seem to be in a non-fiction phase at the moment. Unfortunately, I know that if I try to force myself to read something I'm not really in the mood for, chances are I'll abandon it unfinished, so in an effort to actually *finish* books I'm going with whatever I'm in the mood for!

I've been keeping track of what and how much I write for several years, but it's never occurred to me to do the same with reading until now.
