Becker’s grandmother was about half his size, and several times more talkative. Jess liked her instantly, and not just because of the excellent homemade chocolate cake.
After dinner, Margaret shared a mischievous smile with Jess.
“So, do you think it’s time we embarrass young Hilary?”
An expression of panic spasmed across Becker’s face, and he almost sprayed cake everywhere.
“Oh, shush.” Margaret waved a hand at him. “And don’t sulk in front of your lovely lady friend, either.”
Jess tried not to giggle.
“Jess, would you like to see some photos of Hilary when he was little?”
Becker whimpered quietly.
