The house was quiet when Ryan got back from the shops. He paused, senses suddenly on alert. ‘Quiet’ was not a word he associated with his house since the arrival of the puppies a couple of weeks earlier.
Ryan dumped his shopping and went in search of his omega and puppies. The boys had been whining for a feed as Ryan left on an emergency milk and bread and washing powder run (and Christ, when had he become so bloody domestic?), but there was no sign of them in the living room.
He found them in the bedroom. Ryan stopped in the doorway and caught his breath.
Becker was lying on his side, curled up around the nest of puppies that were snuggled against his chest. All four of them appeared to be asleep.
Ryan stayed where he was, committing the scene to memory. Becker bare-chested was always an attractive sight, but right then any feelings of arousal were being completely overwhelmed by an intense desire to protect his family against anyone or anything that might try to hurt them.
He switched the light off, leaving the door open so that light spilled in from the corridor, and then he crept to the bed and slipped his shoes off, and lay down behind Becker.
Becker stirred, and opened his eyes, twisting slightly to look at Ryan.
“Ryan?” He suddenly became more alert. “Shit, I didn’t mean to fall asleep, I should-”
“Shush,” Ryan silenced him. “Go back to sleep. You look like you need it. I can watch over them for a while.”
“But they didn’t get a full feed, they’ll need mmmph.”
Ryan didn’t stop kissing Becker until he was certain the other man had stopped trying to speak.
“I’m sure when they’re hungry they’ll let us know. Very loudly and insistently. Right now they’re asleep, so I suggest you take the opportunity while you can to follow their example.”
Becker gave him a tired smile.
“Maybe just for a while.”
He turned back and closed his eyes. Ryan cuddled up against him and slid his arm around Becker’s waist. In less than thirty seconds, Becker’s soft breathing betrayed the fact that he was asleep again.
Ryan propped himself up on his elbow and looked over Becker’s shoulder at the puppies. They were cuddled together in a multi-coloured bundle of fur and contented snuffling, Kay nestled between her brothers as if the boys were already attempting to protect her.
Ryan knew he ought to go and put the milk in the fridge, and maybe tidy the living room a bit while he had the chance. But he stayed right where he was, holding his lover and watching his puppies, and enjoying the quiet moment while it lasted.
