Faster, higher, stronger, tougher, better exam results, more constructive after school activities.
He tried. He really did. All those hours studying and training. Rehearsing for the role of the man Becker knew he was expected to become.
Every photo, medal and trophy in the house was a reminder of the achievements of previous generations. A challenge to be met.
And yet, the overriding memory of his childhood was his father’s disappointment.
All of which had taught Hilary Becker one thing; it would not be enough to simply meet his father’s expectations, or to equal him.
He had to be better.
