Abby kept watch in the cretaceous night, listening to Connor mumbling. He was having nightmares again.
She fought the urge to reach out and hold him, to chase away his fears, and her own. As always, she held back.
If they started down that road they could never go back. There would be promises of love and forever. Promises that would inevitably be broken, and then there would only be pain and loss.
Except... this was Connor. What if he was the exception?
Connor curled up, whimpering her name.
Abby finally decided to risk the pain, and reached for him.
