You all heard the Commodore. I'd recommend the same; keep in contact with allies, account for non-combatants, and seek shelter as soon as possible ( Read more... )

Never thought I'd see something like this again.

Lately this place feels a little too familiar. Kind of wrong to have missed it...

Something like this happened in your home world?

We called it the Dark Hour. When I came here I thought they might be the same as the 'plane shifts' you guys talk about. Are we dealing with another one?

This doesn't seem to be a plane shift. The Magisters can usually sense a definite change in atmospheric conditions.

Can I ask you to describe this 'Dark Hour?' It's not unheard of for events here to echo things that have occurred in other worlds.

...It's not something that can easily be understood without seeing it. The Dark Hour was something like a pause in normal time. Devices shut off, power stops working, and all but a few are transmogrified into these large coffins. Those who are awake start to see and hear things you'd think couldn't exist. Buildings warp. Walls bleed. All water turns into blood. And you see Shadows.

[ There's a pause while he takes that in. ]

...that certainly sounds like a plane shift.

So yourself and others, those with your unique abilities, stayed active during this. And I presume you are not speaking of ordinary shadows.

Shadows are something like people's dark sides. Apathy, depression, anger. Get enough of them together and you've got The Fall on your hands.

[pause.]

But we stopped it. He... stopped it.

[Sob, switches to filter. Doesn't really want to have Minato overhearing this. Hell, it's the first time he's told it to anybody, since the only people he might tell it to were there at the time anyway.]

Arisato. I don't completely get how he did it, but since he was young he had acted as a barrier holding back the personification of Death. In the end, he sacrificed himself in order to hold back Nyx, the end of the world.

The Dark Hour ended. In exchange... we lost him.

...I'm sorry.

I wish I could say I didn't know the feeling. But it's terrible that one as young as you would have to bear the memory.

It's not that. It's just that I told myself I was done losing people. I feel as though I've learned nothing.

[okay composing himself here.]

The Dark Hour was created through the concentration of people's negative emotions. Nyx was summoned because humanity was calling out to be ended. The plane shifts in Nuadoria sound like they must have a cause at the root of them too.

[ long, long pause. When he does finally speak, it's in a very different tone, a slow hardening to bitter anger. ]

...you're right. There is a cause.
