Carry On My Wayward Son

Since I have a habit of picking up books in the grocery store while shopping I decided to share some of the treasures I've found there.

Usually it’s the cover art (or title that draws me in) I know, honestly there probably are good books with okay (or bad) cover art and titles, but when I'm shopping with my mom...fast paced is key.

& grocery stores have a limited number of books, since most of them are soft core romance (non fantasy) porn. Yuck! D:

I tend to delve deeper into summaries when I have the time and am surrounded by books, like in Barnes & Noble or Borders or something. There slooow, take your time pace is key…unless I’m with my mother (which I usually am).

The first 2 I came across and bought on a whim would be The Strain by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan and Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

The Strain is an edgy and original vampire thriller/horror.

No emo vampire falling in love with the damsel in distress here. (Okay I’ll admit it I read and -liked- the Twilight series but this whole cult fandom of moms and daughters seeking vampires is WAY out of hand, I liked vamps when it was “weird” to like them…

now everyone and their mother has Twilight inspired movies/books/teeshirts/jewelry/etc)

Now that’s just weird. And semi creepy. Who would’ve thought vampires were the gentleman? And what the FUCK does that say about men in general…?

Anyway, Twi-rant aside The Strain takes vampires down to their base roots following the strange deaths of passengers on a Boeing 757 plane. It’s up to the CDC to figure out why, but there are those who don’t WANT them to find out.

My second treasure was Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

The summary was enough to make a purchase (and, yes, the cover art was pretty too). The story itself was somewhat interesting; my only problem was it was a bit childish, I realize this is partly due to the fact that she is writing towards YA. But I read A LOT of YA novels and most of them still have a mature voice. Her writing was decent and story interesting enough for me to look for more of her books (which I see are not all YA) so hopefully I’ll be able to find something that fits more of my tastes.

My third discovery was a much better, Black Dust Mambo by Adrian Phoenix. I was always interested in Louisiana and their voodoo and hoodoo but at the same time I cannot seem to find fantasy books surrounding that area (I’m sure they are there I just haven’t looked hard enough) but this rewarded my find. Since then I have purchased A Rush of Wings by Adrian but didn’t like it as much as BDM. When I get more money I plan on buying the rest of both series.

& finally, my most recent discovery (of four days ago) Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane. The cover art MADE ME DROOL. Pretty, punk, tatt’d girl in a post apocalyptic world? My niche. Totally. It took me a matter of 3 days to finish this one. This time around the enemy are ghosts (and no, not the pansy “boo” ghosts either) the ghosts that destroyed 2/3 of the worlds population. Those are some mighty pissed off ghosts. So needless to say I NEED THE SEQUELS. And of course, anything else she has written because she is my new author interest

So. There you go. Next time you’re looking for a quick find? Take a quick look for a gem worthwhile.
