when i started driving myself to school 6 years ago, i wasn't that concerned with gas prices. my folks are paying for that anyway. but whenever i needed to, i usually fill up a hundred pesos worth. at that time, that was enough to drive you home, and to where ever you're gonna go the day after.
a few years ago, i changed cars. i didn't have much concern back then with gas prices, so instead of buying a gas friendly hatchback, i bought a sport compact. at first, i didn't have problems with gas consumption. as a matter of fact, i used to rev it high and speed through the streets on my way home from work, which usually ends at midnight. higher revs mean more consumption, but what the heck...
fast forward to the present, i ended up mumbling to myself every friday night whenever i receive text messages from pr people from the oil companies, complaining when are they going to have mercy on everyone.
ironically, these days, i just rev my car up to around 2000-2500rpm, and i still have to fill up 500 pesos worth of gas every other day. try filling up 100 pesos today and see where it gets you?
just to illustrate a clearer picture, the price per liter of unleaded gasoline when i started driving (2002), was around 25 pesos. so i was actually getting 4 liters for 100 pesos at that time.
this past weekend, oil companies raised their prices again, increasing the price of unleaded gasoline to approximately 60 pesos.
2002 = 25p/liter ; 2008 = 60p/liter
but if you think that the worst is over, think again. it looks like oil price hikes are going continue until at least august, and that's not the worse part. due to the recent depreciation of the peso, instead of 1.50 per week, it would be likely around 2-3 pesos each week. so having a 70 pesos per liter rate isn't far fetched.
i remember when i was a kid. the price that i could remember then was 12 pesos for unleaded and 8 pesos for diesel. wish i lived in that era...
