The amount of time that's gone by with me living in this town and not seeing concerts is ridiculous. I will make it to some of these shows, hell or high water. *ed ones are the most critical.
*DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist - January 18, La Zona Rosa
These are the guys who made modern experimental turntablism possible. Two men, eight turntables, multiple effect pedals.
*Little Richard - January 24, Paramount Theater
The man may be dead soon, and he's still one of the founding pillars of rock 'n' roll.
Robin Trower - January 27, La Zona Rosa
He started as the guitarist for Procol Harum, but he soon split and made a name for himself as the guy who inherited Hendrix's throne for psychedelic-blues-rock crossover. (This was in the seventies, all the SRV fans can get your underwear out of the wad it's suddenly bunched into.)
Super Furry Animals - February 2, Emo's
They're Welsh. They write pop music. I think Sparks were singing about these guys when they wrote "The Number One Song In Heaven." Just listen to "(Drawing) Rings Around The World" and try to disagree.
The Bravery - February 5, Emo's
The forgotten group (behind The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Faint, etc.) in the New Wave Revival of 2004, and the one that probably had the best single out of the whole lot of them with their debut, "An Honest Mistake."
North Mississippi All-Stars - February 21, Antone's
One of the better jam bands. The first time I heard them, I was watching a DVD of material from the first Bonnaroo festival; they opened a song with a washboard solo---a washboard fitted with multiple distortion pedals. A washboard that was lit on fire and left hanging off the mic stand.
BB King - April 6, Austin Music Hall
I missed him when he came to Penn State. I probably shouldn't miss him this time around.
*Ministry - April 15, La Zona Rosa
Al Jourgensen has declared that this is the last Ministry tour, as he wants to focus on other projects (PLEASE let one of them be Lard...), but
nevertheless, I kinda gotta go. And I'll be hoping to hear "Stigmata" the whole time.
*The Cure - June 8, Austin Music Hall
My first live exposure to this group was MTV's Unplugged, where I was practically bored to sleep, so I wrote them off until my cousin Eric got me a copy of their Trilogy DVD, where they play three of their key albums (Pornography, Disintegration & Bloodflowers) in their entirety. Necessary.
