“I told you Bill, I’m fine,” Laura gently chided as Bill wiped away the dried blood from her hallow cheek. The soft swipe of his thumb across her cheek gave her the faintest echo of pleasure; every sensation was cruelly dull these days.
He let out a shaky breath. “Damn stubborn woman.”
They’d always driven each other a little crazy; they’d been mad with anger, mad with pleasure, mad with love, and now mad with grief. She took pride in the fact that even now as she stood on death’s doorstep, that she could still get him riled up over something.
“You like me that way,” she whispered conspiratorially, grinning as he put one arm around her.
“I do,” he confirmed. H snuck a quick kiss to her temple as they moved together, slowly but surely. “In fact, I love you for it.”
Each step took so much effort, but it was worth it. It was worth it just to walk arm in arm with him, finally; to not care about the stares people threw their way.
“Here we are,” he said gently as they stopped in front of the raptor.
Kara held out a hand to Laura. “Madam President,” she said with a nod of her head, “Are you ready to see our new home?” The grin that stretched across her face was pure Starbuck, and Laura couldn’t help but return it.
“I’ll see you soon.” Not a question.
“You will.” A promise.
He gathered her in his arms, careful to resist the temptation to hold her tight and close to him, and kissed her gently. He felt her smile under his lips, into their kiss.
The doors to the raptor slowly closed, carrying his heart off to somewhere unknown, likely for the last time.
“I’ll see you soon,” he whispered.
