"Our ship got lost in the middle of a standard run." Still quiet. "Between one second and the next; all the stars changed and there was nothing to navigate by."
Two marines bring him to what he presumes is the medical wing, and leave him there, ship-pale, skinny, with dark-purple wedges under his eyes.
This isn't familiar. At all.

He breaks off, staring.

Jordie braces himself against the bulkhead.
And says, faintly, "The patron saint of lost causes."

Simon swallows.
"Are you all right?"
He's got a thousand questions, at least, but that one's the first.

He throws a quick, hunted look at the door, then reaches to take Jordie's arm and steer him to a chair further in.

"Hi," he says, weakly. "What?"

"I can't explain how you got here," he says, quietly. "I can't explain how I got here. Except that I'm guessing it's the same way."
Beat.
"Were you on a ship?"

"They -- shot everybody." It's a question. "Except for me and the pilot -- they said they couldn't afford -- "

"Nice to be useful," he says, and looks away.

It had taken several days, for him and Kaylee; everybody assumed that they must already know.

His hands knot together briefly and then spread, groping for the words to explain something he doesn't entirely understand himself.
"We're not where we were."
