[BSG crossover, meet this continuity. It's two great AUs that AU great together!]

He's familiar enough with the Pegasus's infirmary by now that he's working evening shifts alone. Being alone is something of a relief, really ( Read more... )

He offers his name as Lefty Jude. When they balk, it's with a smile that he says it's not like you have any proof it isn't.

Two marines bring him to what he presumes is the medical wing, and leave him there, ship-pale, skinny, with dark-purple wedges under his eyes.

This isn't familiar. At all.

"Dr. Jude?" says a voice nearby, as an indistinct figure behind a plastic curtain reaches up to push it aside. "I'm --"

He breaks off, staring.

Jordie braces himself against the bulkhead.

And says, faintly, "The patron saint of lost causes."

Simon swallows.

"Are you all right?"

He's got a thousand questions, at least, but that one's the first.

Dumbly he shakes his head.

"...okay. Okay, come sit down for a moment --"

He throws a quick, hunted look at the door, then reaches to take Jordie's arm and steer him to a chair further in.

He goes where Simon says, looking at his feet in their new combat boots that pinch a little, trying to find the pattern in the deckplating.

"Hi," he says, weakly. "What?"

Simon perches on a stool, once Jordie's sitting down.

"I can't explain how you got here," he says, quietly. "I can't explain how I got here. Except that I'm guessing it's the same way."

Beat.

"Were you on a ship?"

Jordie nods, and rakes a hand through his hair, standing it on end. "The intertransport. Londinium and Osiris. I was going home. To Fremont."

I was going home. He has to swallow again.

"Our ship got lost in the middle of a standard run." Still quiet. "Between one second and the next; all the stars changed and there was nothing to navigate by."

His jaw tightens.

"And then the Pegasus came."

He looks up at Simon.

"They -- shot everybody." It's a question. "Except for me and the pilot -- they said they couldn't afford -- "

He nods.

"Everyone but me and the mechanic." Barely audible.

"Nice to be useful," he says, and looks away.

"They've been doing this for some time," he says, still very low. "From what I've heard. Has anyone explained to you about the war?"

It had taken several days, for him and Kaylee; everybody assumed that they must already know.

Jordie's brow furrows.

"Those -- they aren't Independent uniforms." Confused.

Simon shakes his head. "Not Alliance either. We're not --"

His hands knot together briefly and then spread, groping for the words to explain something he doesn't entirely understand himself.

"We're not where we were."
