Live and let live, you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. That's what makes the United States a tad better then anywhere else.
And during every presidency even Clintons was there some punk band or politically active band putting out music that would blast Clinton for his actions. Doesn't matter if the president is a black jewish woman, there will be political flak they will have to face. It just depends on how many palms you grease and how well you know the CEO's of the media corporations.
The current war can't really be faced with previous wars.
Revolutionary war they fought because they fought for their own independence. We're fighting for whose? not really our own... Afghan? Iraqi? what next? North Korean? Sadly we could have done a great deed in winning independence for afghanistan and iraq but we prefer to garrison there and take what is theres.
Civil War. The poor south was winning for the longest time until the the industrial north wore them out. Remember the southerners had fought in wars before, and had greater military leaders. The north was the main supply source of steel and armaments and once that was cut off the south began to ween.
WWII media once again plays a huge role, remember the banners and ads all over telling people to go help uncle sam? Families, women, etc bonded together to help because they were now given a huge opportunity they didn't have before. Women could now do men's work and they wanted to do it well to prove that they were just as good. The media was much simpler back then, there was radio and news reels. And FDR has charisma...he said something, the nation would believe it and do it. No doubt about that, and originally they didn't want to goto war but war was brought to them and when it was the nation rallied. We've done that for 9/11 but unlike FDR, is Bush really doing this for the United States or for a lot more? money, power, oil, greed?
Vietnam... That could have been ended in a different way, the Americans fucked it up and the media gave the wrong impression. Buddhist monk lighting himself on fire...man getting shot in the head. Whats the true reasons behind that? How about the assasination of Diem? Whats the general consensus of him from Vietnamese immigrants versus that of the Buddhist backed Communist? Or the United States?
Anyway I do agree that making effigies and bringing down moral is wrong when you are trying to support the troops. Supporting the troops the best way you can, by being patriotic and atleast giving them something to look forward to so that they dont feel like they are wasting their lives away for nothing (like vietnam).
Bush and the republican party aren't dumb or stupid. they are fucking smart and crafty...especially Chenney and his whole haliburton thing...crafty motherfucker.
in the end this is just how it works out
Before both the rich and the poor fought hand in hand, although the rich may have become officers.
but once the glory of war and the requirement to go fight died away, the rich stayed home and the poor went to war.
There isn't much out there if you don't have much, the military offers you free food, free housing and education as long as you are willing to put your life on the line for your country. That's the simplest reason why we send the poor...
