chicago designated rehearsal logThe rehearsals have tended to go well, if not for a few hiccups and delays by curse left and right (really, he should have taken that into account) and Lorne's been very happy with his turn out so far. There have been issues, sure. But the old saying holds true, and Lorne has faith in his little actors ( Read more... )

Justin has been taking his role as stage crew coordinator--an important-sounding position, if nothing else--very seriously. Every rehearsal finds him backstage, notepad in hand, watching and waiting for something to go wrong.

This is the City, after all. Something will inevitably go wrong.

[ooc: Come up with problems for him to flail at, prod him, poke fun at him for making this Serious Business. Whatever. <3]

Lorne found his coordinator to be very organized as promised. He was used to taking on all of the responsibilities himself, but with Justin around, the tasks hadn't been so burdensome. He would have to take him out for drinks sometime in order to properly thank him for his hard work.

"On the watch, hey Justin-case?" So the joke was corny, and probably not original. It didn't stop Lorne from chuckling a little bit and clapping a hand on Justin's back.

While he had become slightly more accustomed to people who could work and have fun simultaneously since coming to the City (he did work with Abby for over a year, after all), Lorne's joviality during rehearsals baffled Justin to no end. Putting a production together in the City seemed not unlike putting together a puzzle with pieces that occasionally disappeared. The odds of everything going very wrong were monumentally high, and yet Lorne had no apparent concerns. It was inconceivable.

Lorne's jokes also caused Justin some amount of confusion. Puns had never been one of his fortes.

"Yes," he replied with a hesitant smile. Ah. Pun. He refers to his notepad to relay the issues of the day. "Three extras neglected to show up for rehearsal... and one of the stage lights burned out. Everything else is going well."

Challenges always made Lorne happy. Especially those that involved the more stoic, serious types and Justin was enough of a buzzkill the make the challenge extra fun. Not to mention facing a couple apocalypses put most everything else into perspective. Not to mention dealing with the Olsen twins' agent. He'd rather fight a fire breathing dragon then have that mess on his hands again.

"Hey, we're still above par, then! I think we deserve a round of applause. Oh, and just so you're aware, Doll will be doing her own makeup. I spoke to the girls already but I'd rather she's not faced with a hassle, hey?"

"How bad would things have to get for you to consider them bad?" Presumably somewhere between 'we're all going to die' and 'it's the end of the world,' but it's good to know at what point to start panicking. Justin made a notation regarding Doll's makeup. "Thank you."

Lorne thinks about it for a moment, lips pursing and brow furrowed. Evil Powers That Be showing their faces might be kind of sucky but then again, they saw the deities almost weekly around here. He finally shrugs and chuckles a little. "If a gang of vampire hunters show up, hold everyone hostage and subsequently blow the place up? Then you'll see me lose it, kiddo."

It takes Justin a moment to determine that Lorne must be joking. "Noted."

Inara has been going over lines until her head aches so she eventually puts them aside and wanders back to the quiet behind the stage. She catches sight of Justin there, taking notes. He really is very fastidious about his job.

"Are you enjoying yourself or is it all work?"

Justin recognizes Inara instantly although he can't remember speaking to her directly (it is, after all, easier to observe than to interact). He doesn't know much about theater, but she seems good.

Honestly, it hadn't occurred to him to enjoy himself. "It's not work if it's a voluntary position." That's not a particularly good way to continue a conversation. Awkwardly, he adds, "And you? You seem--from what I can hear, you sound... you sing well."

They've spoken on the network before but never in person. It's her first experience with the theater as well but then her job is very much theater in a way.

"Well...no but since it is voluntary enjoying it makes it that much easier." She ducked her head, smiling at his compliment. "Thank you. I enjoy singing. And it's my first time acting but from what I can tell you're doing an excellent job with stage direction. You're very dedicated."

"I suppose so," he replies, nodding. Justin studies his notepad to avoid anything crazy... like eye contact. Inara's nice enough, but she's pretty. Pretty members of the fairer sex are, regardless of the situation, difficult to talk to. "You're welcome. And thank you. It's organization... nothing challenging."

"I think that depends a great deal on the person doing the organizing," Inara laughs softly. She tilts her head, noticing the way the boy doesn't make eye contact with her. She has to sit on her fingers, keeping her companion training to herself so that she doesn't reach over and place them under his chin, lifting his gaze up to hers. He's not a client, even if she could help him with the confidence issues she's fairly certain are tied to the lack of eye contact.

"I've a number of friends who find it greatly challenging."

Justin doesn't know what to make of this. Really, it's glorified list-making; he's very good at that and doesn't consider it a viable talent. It's not like singing or acting. "It's a learned skill--organization. Anyone can be good at it."

"In theory," Inara admits with a nod. "I think it's easier for some people than others."

"Do you think the same is true with acting and singing?"

Inara considers his question for a moment. "No. Not really. I think some people have the talent for it or they don't. Raw talent can be refined but if it's not there, it can't be cultivated."
