chicago designated rehearsal logThe rehearsals have tended to go well, if not for a few hiccups and delays by curse left and right (really, he should have taken that into account) and Lorne's been very happy with his turn out so far. There have been issues, sure. But the old saying holds true, and Lorne has faith in his little actors ( Read more... )

Doll had gone through the usual vigorous warm-up routine before the actual rehearsal, and she was taking advantage of the couple of minutes before they actually started to go and look for their director, hoping she'd find him quickly. He was usually always around.

Now that the show date was approaching she knew there'd be dress rehearsals at any time, and she had a rather specific reason to want to talk to Lorne about that. At the circus she always did her own hair and make-up and she was only a dancer in the show so she was hoping it would be the same but she thought it was better to ask him if that was okay. She really wouldn't feel comfortable with other people getting a look at the ruined side of her face.

Penny was enjoying the rehearsals. She wasn't much of an actress, but the singing and minimal amount of dancing she had to do were both fun. It helped that everyone involved with the production seemed incredibly nice, of course; being around friends, both old and new, was never a bad thing.

It was nice to see Doll getting into something fun, too. Penny worried about her. The City's habit of pulling people in and then making them disappear as quickly as they had arrived seemed to be taking a toll on her, and Penny considered any distraction from that inevitable fact a good thing.

She waved her friend down during a break in the action. "Freckles! Hey!"

The production really was serving as a good distraction for Doll. Not just because it was fun and she got to be around a lot of people she liked (though of course that helped too) but also because it was another thing to keep her busy and take up time that she'd otherwise waste feeling lonely and worrying about all her siblings back home, not to mention thinking about everyone who was leaving.

With the circus back home they'd be busy from when they woke up to when they went back to sleep, so while having some free time was nice it wasn't what she was used to at all. And the practice she was getting for the show could only help her performance in the circus, so that was another really good thing about it.

She turned quickly when she heard Penny's familiar voice, a cheerful smile already spreading across her face. "'ey Penny! You doin' alright? The whole thing's goin' really well, ain't it?"

"I'm doing great!" she replied enthusiastically. And, for the moment, she was being entirely honest. In the middle of any task, be it rehearsing or working, Penny found it easy enough to avoid dwelling on the latest wave of exits from the City. Talking to Doll also made things better; the circus performer had a certain something about her that never failed to lift Penny's spirits. "I think so. I mean, everyone definitely looks like they're having a good time.

"How's the dancing?"

She nodded at Penny's answer just as enthusiastically, glad that her friend was having fun too and that it seemed like she really meant it. They both had a bad habit of trying to cover it up when they weren't actually doing too well. "They do, don' they? 's nice t'see everyone doin' stuff together an' 'avin' fun at it."

Doll's smile grew wider at the question, because she was feeling rather proud of herself for doing something outside of her usual tightrope walking. "'s fun! Ain't like anythin' 've ever done before but 'm enjoyin' it a lot."

"Yeah?" Penny believed that anything Doll was doing for the production was very different from her circus routine. In addition to the lack of a tightrope, some of the moves for the show were on the raunchy side. Not too bad and kind of fun, but different. "Have you gotten to meet many new people?"

It really was very different for her, but it made for a nice change - even if she had gone and asked to be left out of the raunchiest numbers once she'd seen them. Not really just because she was uncomfortable taking part in it but mostly because she didn't want to do anything her siblings wouldn't have approved of, even if they weren't in the City right now. But even doing something like this outside of the circus was a rather big step for her.

"Oh, yeah, I 'ave! It's surprisin' sometimes, 'ow you can live 'ere ages an' still not know so many people."

"Maybe not too surprising. There're--how many people live here? A million?" It's a shot in the dark, but it certainly seems like a close enough estimate.

"Cor, there's that many? Really? Never would've guessed..." She laughed a little. "Don' know why 'm surprised though, bet London 'ad at least that much too. Jus' got too used to the small villages we used t'visit." She sobered up after a moment. "So many people taken away from their 'omes..."

"Just a guess. I don't know, but it's a big City."

Penny patted Freckles' shoulder. "At least we're not too lonely, right? Think about how it'd be if the City was tiny... sure, less people would be missing their homes, but we have good company."

Doll grinned up at the other girl. "Yeah, you're right. Maybe 's a bit selfish, to want to 'ave other people around so we won't be lonely, but there ain't really anythin' wrong with everyone keepin' each other company. Think I'll find it right weird back in England once I get back after being in the City so long." Though really she only said once I get back instead of if I get back so as not to seem too pessimistic.

"It can't be too selfish... I think most everyone here likes having other people around." Penny glances at a clock on the wall--almost time to get back to practice. She gives Doll a quick hug. False optimism is a step above pessimism! "But weird in a good way. The City's nice sometimes, but nothing can quite beat home."

"'s true enough. Or at least most people do, 've met a couple who like their own company best. Doesn't really matter if that's what makes 'em 'appy though." She returns the quick hug, grateful once again to have a friend like Penny here in the City.

"Nah, wouldn't say that nothin' can beat 'ome. Just that nothin' can beat friends or family, right?" She gives Penny a wink, then adds, "See ya later? Need t'get back to the other dancers."

"If they don't mind the ticking, more power to them." Although how anyone could be a loner in the City was beyond Penny. Between the clock and all of the people to talk to, it seemed that almost anyone would be driven out of solitude eventually. As Doll said, though, whatever made them happy.

Ah, Doll hit on the truth. "You're completely right." She smiled at the wink and replied, "I'm sure you will. Break a leg!"

Lorne had been buzzing around to make sure certain things were in order before he would have to plant his butt in front of the stage and actually do his main job. The costuming had been mostly taken care of, as did advertising and getting everyone to pitch in with the posting of fliers.

Doll would find him backstage, hovering around a few members of his stage crew to make sure that the lighting system was going to be a problem. He spotted her hovering in that way that people tend to do, nodded once and finished up his current conversation. He smiled wide as he approached, clipboard and pen in hand. "Doll, you doll! Everything okay, peaches?"

Doll waited for him to be done with whatever he was already dealing with, trying not to look impatient - though really it was more nerves than anything else. She usually got along with most people well enough but when it came to something like this she always ended up feeling anxious. Back home it wouldn't be a problem because all the people she worked with already knew about her scars, but here...

"Hey Lorne," she smiled back at him, a bit reassured already. "Yeah, everythin' is fine. Just needed to ask ya about somethin'." Taking a deep breath she continued, "Was wonderin' if it'd be alright for me t'take care of my own 'air an' make-up...know we'll be busy switchin' from one scene to the other an' that maybe someone else was going to take care of that for everythin' t'go faster but 'm used to it from the circus too an' 'm sure I'd manage it. I'd just...really appreciate it if it was alright with you?" She didn't bring up her reason why just yet, hoping she wouldn't have to talk about it.
