When we first are introduced to Sawada Tsunayoshi, he is . . . a complete failure. In school, he was known as "No-Good Tsuna" and was constantly picked on and bullied, thanks to his failing grades, his wimpy attitude towards practically anything dangerous and difficult, and his inability to do anything that involve sports. He had a crush on a girl that he would never get ( which was the only reason why he even bothered going to school ), and would always admit to being a loser. A spineless wimp. Putting it plain and simple, he fails at everything. Everything. And hard.
Well, until he met Reborn. Reborn was assigned to be his tutor- not for school ( he did help with school work though ), but to be the next boss of the Vongola Family, one of the strongest families in the Mafia. From this point on, everything changed. Or, you would think!
Tsuna wants nothing to do with the Mafia. It's dangerous, and illegal, and- just impossible for a boy like him! Tsuna denies his roots and bloodline constantly, or whenever he's reminded of it. He tends to panic easily, and immediately states that he can't do something, or that it's impossible.
Tsuna never really had friends- until Reborn showed up, of course. Ever since then, people and all kinds of weird would flock to him like a magnet. Not literally, but he did manage to make friends who are now his family guardians, as well as befriending his crush, Kyoko Sasagawa. Even if Tsuna always says he wants nothing to do with the mafia, when the time calls for it- believe it or not, his leadership begins to show. The change of attitude when his friends and loved ones are in danger makes a complete 180 from his usual self.
We see his change of attitude from being a wimp who couldn't do anything to a true leader that can do anything. When he is sent to the future. Tsuna is thrusted into a war which only he can stop, which leads to many life and death situations, and it's here where he shows how much potential he's got as a boss. His "family" begins to expect him to make the decisions, and it's here where we see that he's most likely accepted his role as a mafia boss, because he does make the choices, that will benefit them.
If some guy were to walk up to him on a pleasant day and put a knife to his throat, he's most likely to plead for his life and do anything the guy wants. That's how he roles, for some reason. When he's in danger, he can barely muster up the dying will to save himself- when it's just him and only him. When his friends are involved, though? He's an opponent not to be taken lightly. The people he cares for is the key to his power. His friends mean everything to him, and he'll do absolutely anything to keep them away from harm.
At one point during training, the first Vongola Boss (his great great great grandfather) as well as all other former bosses of the family, appeared to him in a vision, and showed him all the horrible things that the Vongola did throughout time and how many innocent lives Tsuna must learn to throw away in the name of being a boss. Tsuna, outraged, yells and states that he would rather destroy the Vongola than kill and be part of a life as cruel as that. While he can and does have the potential to easily kill while in HDW mode, he completely avoids it- unless, like in Byakuran's case, he must. Tsuna's goal is to protect, not to kill.
When he returns to the past, sadly, we see that he's right back into denial and being the wimp he was introduced as- though, it should be noted that he has already grown and changed considerably. Remember when the answer to everything was always "No!! I can't do this!!"? It's changed from a no, to possible maybes- and for Tsuna? That's a pretty big step forward.
In the future, we do not see all of future Tsuna (only a shadowed profile, his smile, and silhouettes), but it is know that at this point in time, Tsuna has accepted his role and is a powerful, yet kind leader as tenth boss of the Vongola family. That being said, that somewhat spineless and confused boy we see now has a chance and will eventually change his ways. Just not now.
