Blair has dreamt of mistletoe for almost as long as Serena can remember.
She has often fantasized about her first kiss with Nate beneath mistletoe. She has planned it out, piece by piece - because anything that doesn’t fit in Blair Waldorf’s perfect world doesn’t exist - and has hung the mistletoe in every doorway at her Christmas party, which Nate swore to attend earlier that week. As expected, they kiss beneath the mistletoe.
That night, Blair describes it all vividly to Serena and inserts more synonyms of “amazing” than Serena knew existed.
The truth hidden in her eyes belies her excitement.

From then on, Blair constantly relays every detail about her new relationship. She even goes so far as to discuss a future marriage.
“It’s not as if I expect him to propose tomorrow - at this age, neither of us is quite ready for the commitment - but wouldn’t it be romantic if he proposed beneath mistletoe?” Serena nods because disrupting Blair’s world means disrupting their friendship and it’s not worth it.
So Serena can’t say she misses when their discussion was more than Nate and Blair.
Besides, Serena knows she can’t explain why she feels the violent urge to throw up.

It is when Blair is busy planning out her future life in the dressing room, mistletoe included, that Serena finally snaps. She isn’t sure which straw it is that breaks her back - maybe the discussion of the shade of brown of their future cat, maybe the one about their daughter’s best subject - but she loses control all the same.
She spins around, the playful, energized Serena momentarily forsaken, and she asks with more venom than had originally been intended, “Is there anything in your life that can go unplanned?”
Serena almost visibly winces at the poison, but she doesn’t falter.

Blair will not give Serena the satisfaction of stalking out the door after her.
She lingers for a while, looking over the clothes she had intended to try on. Just because Serena chose today to PMS does not mean Blair needs to be affected. But the room breathes Serena, and Blair isn’t sure whether this is why she loiters or finally walks out of the dressing room (she assures herself that the reason she doesn’t purchase the clothes is that they simple aren’t worth her time).
Blair practically glides to the exit in her mistletoe world, the epitome of grace.

Blair will find Serena standing just beyond the doors. She will look at her with her head held high, overt disdain curling her lips.
“I thought you’d never leave,” Serena will comment, as if she hadn’t stormed out on her best friend. “God, Blair, you didn’t even buy anything?”
But Serena won’t wait for an answer. Instead, she will step forward and her mouth will meet Blair’s and Blair will be very, very glad she wasn’t carrying any shopping bags at the time. (They’d be on the floor and ruined and that wouldn’t do.)
And Blair won’t remember the mistletoe.

Blair would like to say she was caught off guard and didn’t have a chance to end it, but she’s the one pressing Serena hard against the wall and it’s broad daylight and she’s never thought to use “out of control” as a synonym for anything remotely adequate (inexplicably, this is much more than adequate) and very suddenly, she forgets it all.
Serena finally pulls away gently, grinning mostly in her words. “How’s that for unplanned?” She pauses and then adds, “I don’t think you need the mistletoe, B.”
Blair never again discusses the skin tone of her future daughter.

Serena knows, somehow, that they won’t mention it again. (Or, when they do, it will be years into the future, when they’re both drunk and bold and tentative all at once.) That it means so much more than a chaste peck beneath mistletoe. That diving in will mean plunging in and Serena will have to steel herself all over again.
She thinks (hopes) this will be enough to hold onto for a while. It’s a bit like Halley’s Comet: if she’s lucky enough to live another seventy-five years, she might see it again.
(Blair burns brighter than Halley ever could.)
