“Come on Nathan… please - you’ve got to play it with me!” Nathan looked up from the notepaper in front of him and stared at his younger brother.
“Peter - this needs to be done by tomorrow.” He told the eight year old firmly. Peter nodded and looked down at the box in his hands. “Look, I’ll play it with you at the weekend alright?”
“I’m going to Josh’s this weekend.” His brother told him quietly.
“Then play it with Josh.”
“I want to play it with you,” Peter muttered, before looking down and shrugging. “It’s ok if you need to work. We can do it next week.” He turned and walked to the other side of the room, sitting down and beginning to look through the game. Forcibly diverting his eyes, Nathan returned to his essay.
The Origins of the Electoral System of the United States of America
If his father had not been a politician he so would not be doing this. But his mother had said that it would be a wonderful thing if one of them carried on the family name. He risked a glance at Peter, engrossed in the game he had found on the top of Nathan’s shelves. Somehow he couldn’t see his brother ever being the one to make that happen, so he had to be the one to pay attention and get the grades.
“Nathan, what does ‘post-apocalyptic’ mean?”
“After the end of the world,” he replied automatically, remembering looking the words up when he had first played the game.
“So the world’s over and it’s now populated with mutant animals?” the younger Petrelli asked.
“Uhuh,” he replied distractedly, flicking through his textbook.
“But what about the people?” Peter asked. Nathan looked up again. It was honestly a question he had never thought to ask.
“Well, the game does need them.”
“Then why set it in this world? Why not make them go through to an alternate universe where humans never existed? Why kill everyone?”
“I don’t know… and I’m trying to work!” Nathan snapped back.
“Sorry…” And they sunk into silence again.
The essay was not going anywhere - at all. He had an introduction. It was a good introduction. It should be, he had written it enough times. Somehow he could not seem to pay attention though. He really should have started this sooner, their mother would not be happy if she found out.
The blank lines seemed unfillable, they just sat there, mocking him with their emptiness. The whiteness was almost hypnotising, maybe he could get away with writing this later.
“Hey Peter… you still want to play?” he asked. His brother looked up happily and nodded. “Ok… so - you want to be Leonardo?”
“Nah… Donatello… you’re Leonardo.” He pushed back his pen and paper and walked over to sit next to his brother on the floor.
Ten minutes later he was getting into it; he had forgotten how much fun teenage mutant ninja turtles could be.
“No… you can’t do that it’s not…” There was a discreet knock on the door before it was opened and their mother walked in. The brothers looked at each other guiltily.
“Nathan… I thought you were doing you homework until dinner,” she said icily, her voice cutting through the previously convivial atmosphere of the room. He stood up quickly and self consciously tugged his shirt down to decrease the wrinkles.
“I was… I mean, I am…. I just, took a break. I… I’m just going back to it.”
“I know you are dear.” The minuscule smile on her face was expectant and he quickly strode back over to his essay. Knowing that he was back on task she turned to her other son. “Peter, I think it’s time you stopped disturbing your brother, don’t you?” She waited next to the door for her youngest to gather up his things and walk out of the door. “He needs this grade if he’s going to be a congressman some day.” She shot one more look at him before calmly walking out herself, ushering Peter along with her and closing the door firmly behind her.
