A smile, a nod and a small joke, idle flirting as you wait for your meal/drink/information.
“Yes they’re both mine, ma’am… 10 and 6/13 and 9/7 and 2… no it’s just me.”
Pity, a sad smile and a pat on the arm. Mothering now, not flirting, and with the information comes a plate of cookies and maybe a glass of milk.
“Thank you, Miss, it’s very kind of you.”
Then, always the same question: sometimes cautious, sometimes suspicious, sometimes (when the boys are a bit more grown up and the girl’s a bit younger) wistful. In response, the same words: sometimes contrite, sometimes amused, always truthful.
“No, we’re not stopping - just passing through.”
