The writing process is never-ending. This means that you would be editing every meaningful piece of writing you produce for, very likely, the rest of your life. Not your career - your life. Why? Because if you're a serious writer, it's not about the rave reviews, it's about the writing itself. Raw talent will only get you so far, and even then - not very far. Okay - so that 19 yr. old published Eragon. Do you think that's a great piece of literature? Most people agree that it's an enjoyable read, but not much more than a conglomeration of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, etc. Why do you think all the classics have 1st, 2nd, etc. editions? Because those authors never stopped editing.
It's consuming. You'll be both exhilirated and devastated at times. Hope, love, hate, despair - all these are parts of being a writer. Again, it's consuming. Meaning that it won't be a side-job, and it most likely won't bring any appreciable amount of income for a long time. Perhaps posthumously. (This means of course, you must live two lives - one to support yourself, and the other to live.)
Don't write for the praise of others. If you want flattery or adoration, try something else. I'm not trying to discourage you from writing more, but the fact that you're not an English major because you didn't have the patience to let your grammar catch up with your potential, is something you'd have to consider. Of course, you could write for your own entertainment.
Just saying - don't do it because you think it'll be glamourous. It's not. The ones that are famous, those are the rare few. And of those, very very very few of them actually did it for the glory. The ones who do it for glory are the ones who usually come and go, always unremembered.
Sorry this is anonymous, but I don't know you. Just saw your post.
