I really, really liked this movie. As a non-Trekkie who enjoys the idea of space and the idea of the Star Trek legacy I really, really enjoyed this movie. It has in no way turned me into a Trekkie, like my father, but it has made me want to do my research a little more.
The movie begins with Kirk's father. Who, I guess would also be Kirk, I guess. You get to learn about Spock's origins and the fact that he is half human. Which, I did not know. And there are a ton of awesome space battles. And I think that had I not been sitting so close to the screen (towards the middle where the screen fills up the vision but not so close that I have to look up) I would have seen all of the movements and battle much more clearly instead of seeing mainly only what was right there in front of me. There were also a lot of fight scenes as Kirk is particularly violent and prone to fighting.
Then there were the guys sitting behind me. Two or three of them that decided to play Captain Obvious through out the movie. "That's Ice" "That's It! The Enterprise!" "I just realized something!" "Here it comes! Here it comes!" Even after being shushed by more than just myself. Through the ENTIRE movie. But there were points that they shut up. However for the most part I wanted to bean them over the head with a large happy stick.
Otherwise. . . I really had a good time. There were a lot of moments that they popped in a line here and there from the series. "Good God, Jim! I'm a Doctor! Not a Physicist!" And then there was the line that I had been waiting for through out the movie from Scottie: "I'm givin' her all I got Captain!" And the last words were the beginning words in the series - said by Lenard Nemoy:
"Space... the Final Frontier, these are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."
Not to mention that the last song was the theme song of the first series. I know that I want this movie added to my collection. It gets a 8.7 out of ten from me. Nearly a 9, but I think that it isn't one I'll watch all the time like some of the others.
