nobody seems to get the gist of it all.
Somehow, I have never taken extreme offence to people who subconciously abase me with their self-acclaimed 'witty' remarks hoping for a cheap laugh. But what irks me is when they drop to this level of degradation in order to exalt themselves as superior to appear better to everyone else. This whole 'promotion' ordeal at work has been blown way out of proportion that people are acting like neanderthals and beginning to transgress the values that are supposed to be upheld. Look buddies, I got the promotion because I deserved it. Telling me that you're better than me doesn't make any difference, I was given the title. Not you. Be happy for me and move on. Now if only I had the willingness and intrepidity to say it to their faces.
Also, it drives me up the wall when I say a "what-if" comment about something or someone and the person listening feels the need to enlighten me with their thoughts saying, "Watch it. Someday it may come true." or however they wish to rephrase it. But that's not what agitates me about the situation, it's when what they said actually comes true.
