[As promised, she did not leave. Her room was darker than it had ever been before. The fear of the darkness was still there, but apathy made it impossible for her to do anything about it. So the light of her television was joined by two lamps, and the shadows didn't reach out for her.]

[Ardent arrived after dinner, more than a little worried. He hadn't brought anything with him, even if he thought he should have. He knocked on her door and waited. She'd probably be in.]
[She stood up to open the door, blanket pulled around her shoulders. Though it was later, it looked as if she hadn't actually made herself ready for the day at all.]
