WOOO I was supposed to work today but there's SO MUCH SNOW out here in the bumhole of nowhere and a water pipe's burst somewhere so the whole High Street is like a glacier and the buses have been diverted around us. It's like a plague village! Cut off from the world. Revised plan: stay in and catch up on some writing (prompt post is
here if you want something, I'm too broke/disorganised for proper gifts so writing stories instead) but I'm going to have to brave the snow again because I need to go and post some letters, so that should be fun considering I don't have any waterproof shoes. I've got idiotically high platforms, knackered old frayed Cons, and prehistoric Doc Martens with the stitches all falling apart. My wellies are somewhere in the garage under everything else in the world. :( I fail at appropriate dress. I wore my Docs on my first mission out, but that's terrifying because they're so old the tread is completely worn down and they're smoother than glass on the bottoms. BRB, skating to the post office.
I should update about Chester too because it was glorious! <3 We made delicious partymix in Lucozade and Ribena bottles (mine was gin, chambord and cherry coke, instead of gin Die had rum that had mysteriously turned into whisky?? WEIRD!) then headed into town to meet Richard LOL Felix (his actual middle name) for the ghost walk but the pub we were supposed to meet at was all shut up. So we hung around for a bit smoking and glugging partymix and creasing up at the idea that we might have been stood up by Richard LOL Felix, which is somehow BETTER and more fun than actually going out with anybody else in the world, but still no show by gone 7:30 so we stomped off across town to the place the tour was supposed to finish at so we could beg for phone numbers or a tour route or something, and then back again to where we'd started so we could check in on likely places and see if we could find them. SUCCESS! Mark found them eventually - turns out we'd been told the wrong start time and also hadn't been informed that the meeting place had been changed due to the first pub closing down, AND ALSO FELIX WASN'T COMING! Fail all round, until we learned the reason he wasn't there was because he'd injured his back falling off the top of a Portaloo and then it became magnificent <3 We will hunt him down eventually. OUR TIME WILL COME.
The woman leading the tour instead was Claire Pritchard and she was ace, she's local so she knew all the stories really well and it's so much better when you can tell someone's really into it and really loves all the history and the places they're talking about. <3 Interesting to get another perspective on it too, because she really believe in it all and kept talking about ghosts she's seen etc. Edd Felix in Derby is a giant sceptic and basically spent the whole night slagging off Derek Acorah and mediums in general and debunking all the ghost stories :D which is partly why I'm slightly in love with him. I'm totally open to persuasion, I'll happily believe whenever I see/feel/hear/smell something, but mostly I'm just a bit obsessive about history and the stories and what other people believe. We had a go at dowsing with crystals in the Marlborororororough, which was also pretty special - I'm quite sure I've just got a shaky hand, but when Claire said to ask yes or no questions my crystal swung quite violently for yes when I asked if Richard Felix is a berk. It was also agreed that The Clash is the best band in history, and Die's was a fan of Iggy Pop. There seems to be some truth behind this crystal mumbo jumbo after all!
We got cheesy beany jacket potatos after the tour, then Claire took us back to cover what we'd missed at the beginning which was ace <3 Proper spooky shit going down at the Eagle! Apparently there's an aggressive ghost who gets right up in her face every time she's ever been int he cellar there, so I really really want to go now. I can't be scared of things I don't believe in, but it would be lovely to have the option. :P It's a really good tour, I liked it loads because there's tons about the history of the city as well, it's not just drippy hysterical people wailing about spooks like those idiots from the Saturdays on tv a while ago. The
Derby Gaol site is worth looking at if you're into this sort of thing, it's got all the Felix-organised stuff which seems to be better than a lot of the others because he's ~off the telly~ and so he gets allowed into more places. There are two different tours in Derby which are both brilliant, one in Chester, one in Leicester which I want to do because I already know loads of the grim stories and history from there, one in Chesterfield, something in York, and some other stuff. They organise overnight vigils in castles around the country and in Derby Gaol, which look like the best fun in the world if you're with the right people but are probably a horrible drag if you get stuck with idiots who just screech all the time and get scared by their own shadows. All seances and ouija boards and stuff, which everyone keeps telling me is a shitty idea but... sceptic. :D Can't get hurt if you don't believe. I'm just fascinated by other people's hysteria (and I love Edd Felix a bit).
Wandered round Overleigh cemetary for a bit on Thursday, which was amazing <3 then headed into town discussing our funerals. It's been decided that nothing in the world is ever going to be more brilliant than playing the Thomas the Tank Engine theme as your coffin trundles along into the tunnel for cremation. :D Take me out when I'm done, pulled pork sandwiches for all. Did some fail shopping for a party dress (NOTHING) and some win shopping in Abakhan for wool and fabric, then had tea and GLORIOUS CAKE (it had yellow icing that tasted like love heart sweets and it was covered in star shape sprinkles, GAY AS SIN) and hometime for me. :( Booo. Realy good couple of days, though. Especially the part where Felix fell off a toilet.
