Tora shifted uncomfortably in his seat as a sweaty, balding businessman filled the empty one next to him. Typical. He sighed and leaned his head against the cold glass window of the bus, closing his eyes and letting the buzz of Korn’s angsty guitars distract him from the crowd of the afternoon rush hour. He gazed at the passing cars beneath his lashes and wondered again what exactly he was doing in this bus. It was fucking hot outside and he barely had the energy to move let alone travel all the way across town to Saga's University. Plus, he had to be back at work in a few hours. He glanced down at the bag of bento boxes in his lap with a crooked smile. 'At least they were free,' he thought to himself, feeling silently thankful he worked at his dad’s restaurant. Well... almost.

Actually, the fact that he had graduated from High School four months prior and still didn’t have any kind of goals had been haunting the back of his mind for the last few weeks. He might have been jealous of Saga. Maybe. After all, Saga had managed to make it into the top University in the prefecture and his Father was paying for everything... Tora gave his bento a tender pat at the thought. At least he got to see his dad; Saga’s was always off on business trips, never home. And Saga wasn't even getting to do what he really wanted in University. It was Engineering Major or NO Major as far as his father was concerned...

Tora was beginning to feel sorry for his best friend when he remembered again why he was being squished into a bus window at that moment. He gazed back out at the streets again and heaved a great sigh. The two of them had been inseparable since the day they met. Tora let his eyes go out of focus on the road as he lost himself in those early memories... that first day on the playground...

He had just moved to a new middle school, first year, no friends. You might have called him a lone wolf, even at that age. He just wasn’t really interested in talking to the other kids yet... preferred to make little sand castles and search for bugs on his own.

But Saga had other plans in mind. He was a bit of a troublemaker, actually. Liked to mess with the other kids, play pranks on them- you know the type. He had seen Tora sitting alone by a tree and decided to go see what he was up to, but he was greeted by quick shove to his stomach as Tora pushed him aside, scrambling to look for the little beetle Saga had just squashed with his big stupid sneakers.

“You killed him!!” Squealed Tora, pouting his lips and giving Saga a look full of hurt.

“Ehh? What, seriously?” he took the lollipop he’d been sucking on out of his mouth for a second and looked down below him. “Well, it was just a bug... there’s plenty all over the place...” he replied as he lifted up each foot, expecting to see a few crawl out from underneath right then and there.

“But that one was special... ugh, just go away.” With that, he plopped back down into the dirt and stared at the ground, his chin resting on his knees.

“No way,” Saga answered, joining Tora on the ground. He inspected the other boy with narrowed eyes; dark, messy hair, dark eyes, pale skin... but there was something that kind of drew you in as well, something different.

"Here," he held his lollipop in front of him and beckoned Tora to take it. "Payback. You can have it~"

The other boy looked from the lollipop to Saga and back again, raising his eyebrow at the half eaten candy. “Haha, it’s okay, I’ve got another one anyways.” Saga whipped out a cherry-flavored one from his back pocket and tossed it to the dark-haired boy. It ended up nearly hitting him in the face, but he caught it just in time. After turning it around in his hands for a moment, he decided it was okay to eat.

“I’m Takashi, by the way. But call me Saga-sama~ hehe” he said with a sly smile. “All my friends call me that,” he lied, rolling his eyes up to watch an imaginary bird fly across the sky.

Tora gave him a snort, “They do, huh?” he paused for a moment and stared at the ground again. “M-my name’s... Tora.”

“Tora? What kind of name is that? Should I be afraid? Hahaha.”

“Psssh, what kinda name is Saga?...” he kept his eyes to the ground, unable to think of a comeback.

“Whatever. I think it’s cool!” He stated with a giant grin. Tora chuckled and threw his lollipop stick at the other boy.

They might as well have been glued together for how much time they spent at the other's side after that. They were always in the same classes, played the same sports, same clubs, liked the same girls and everything(much to each other’s dismay). And they didn’t limit it to the school grounds either. At any given time, you were sure to find them together at one of their houses; it was usually Saga’s because his was a lot bigger, more fun, and his dad was always gone. Despite their playful, silly personalities when they were around each other, they both studied really hard to get into the same High School as well, determined to stay together. They made it, of course.

Tora and Saga had that same, perfect friendship all throughout the rest of their school days. Graduation didn’t even really seem real to them as it passed by. Saga’s grades and his dad’s influence had gotten him a spot in a prestigious university, which he'd soon be attending regardless of his opinion on the matter, while Tora didn’t really have any plans (or money) to further his education. They would both still be living in the same city, but they’d be a lot further away from each other than before. And certainly a lot busier...

Tora was startled out of his memories when he heard the name of his stop called out from the bus speakers. He stood up and squeezed past the businessman and weaved through the crowded aisle towards the door. He caught a breath of fresh, polluted air as the doors folded open and he stepped outside onto the sidewalk. He cranked his music back up and started walking towards the campus, his mind still dwelling on the past...

Summer had been nearly perfect. Tora had started working at his dad’s restaurant more, but of course Saga couldn’t stay away for too long. He had ended up hanging out there a lot, pestering Tora while he worked, but also helping out sometimes when it got really busy. But now it had been a little over a month since Saga had started his classes. The two of them had still tried to spend as much time as possible together in the beginning- even when they were away at work or school during the day, they would text and chat on the phone whenever they had a spare minute. It was almost the same as before... almost...

In the last few weeks, Tora felt it had become really one-sided... Saga would never be the first to call or e-mail, and rarely ever replied to Tora's. Even when he did, all Tora got were one-word answers and empty responses. Saga hadn’t shown up at the restaurant in weeks either and Tora was really starting to be bothered by the whole thing. He missed his best friend a lot, and felt like he wasn't really himself anymore when Saga was gone...

'What the hell is wrong with that idiot..' Tora thought to himself as he walked up the steps to the school dormitories. 'He can’t possibly be that busy with homework, are you kidding me?'

Tora had planned on having a long talk today, hence the bento boxes. Food was always a good way to hold Saga’s interest. But the other boy had no idea that Tora was stopping by. 'You'll be getting a nice surprise today, Saga... teach you to ditch your friends...' he thought to himself with a smirk.

But that long talk never happened. In fact, Saga never even knew Tora had come to visit at all.

Saga lived on the first floor of the dorm and his window faced a small garden path on the East side of the campus. Tora’s plan had been to walk up that path and bang on the glass, hoping to scare the shit out of his friend while he was concentrating really hard studying. But his plans changed as soon as he looked through the window...

He hadn’t even made it all the way over, but stood in the middle of the pathway, dumbfounded and much to the annoyance of the passer-by. There was Saga, sitting at his desk... but not alone as usual... he was sittingvery close to a pretty girl, who seemed to have just found one of his jokes immensely entertaining. He could hear her flirty laughter through the wall.

Tora tilted his head to the side slightly, staring from Saga to the girl, and then back at Saga in utter bewilderment. 'Are they studying? Yeah... there are books on the desk... Hmph, doesn’t really look like they’re getting much done though...' he snorted and felt a swell of something dark boil in the pit of his stomach. He blinked and just stood there for a moment, the bag of bento boxes long forgotten, and slipping out of his grip. He snapped out of it just as the bag almost fell to the sidewalk, gripping it tightly again and turning on his heel to walk back up the path.

'What the hell, Saga...'

Tora headed back to the bus stop in a zombie-like daze, his mind anywhere but on the reality around him. He might have been hit by a delivery bike if one of the guys walking right behind him hadn’t pulled him by his shirt collar just in time. He really couldn’t help but wonder why Saga was with that girl, why he had time for her but not for him.

Have you been with her the whole time? Is she the reason you don't call anymore? Because you found yourself a fucking girlfriend and didn't even feel the need to tell me about it?!' Tora was starting to get more than a little pissed off, but it was betrayal more than anger that he felt at the moment. 'What the fuck, Saga. You don’t just ditch your best friend for a piece of ass... and she’s not even that hot! God, she’s probably just using you for your money, you dumbass...

Tora knew he was just making excuses to hate her... He didn’t want to believe Saga had betrayed him, but he couldn’t help but feel a wave of jealousy sweep over him at that thought. It’s definitely gotta be all that girl’s fault. Fucking whore, seducing... Saga wouldn’t do that to me... he wouldn't... He grabbed his iPod as he stepped onto the bus, deciding to blast the heaviest, most hardcore shit he had on it to try and drown out his thoughts. The ride home seemed to take forever, though. The air might have cooled off a bit, but it was even more crowded than it had been earlier. He didn’t even get a seat, so he had to stand in the back, holding onto a leather strap from the roof.

Music or not, he couldn't keep his mind from wondering again... he thought back on the good times and the bad he had shared with Saga... laughed to himself as he remembered all the trouble they had gotten into together, all those detentions spent passing silly notes to each other, then falling asleep on each others shoulders on the late bus back home... He thought about times when he was feeling down, and how the only thing to bring him up and out of his slump was that sweet, special smile, the one Saga gave only to Tora and no one else. That smile alone was enough to brighten his whole day... and now Tora never got to see it. He couldn’t even remember the last time he had felt that warmth...

He really felt like crying. Right there in the back of the bus. Tora wasn’t the type to break down in front of anybody, though. He was stubborn, stoic, and had an air of mystery about him, never letting anyone see how he was feeling, hiding all of his pain inside...

The bus may have been packed to twice its capacity, but Tora had never felt as alone as he did at that moment. He felt his friendship slipping through his fingers and he didn't know what to do...

The tears he shed at that moment weren’t the kind you can see, but the kind that burn at your insides like acid, the kind that stain and bury themselves deep down, even long afterwards.
