The Wife wept silently. That was all she could do now. Her husband had been arrested and produced in court. That, in itself, wasn’t new. But this time he was in for murder, not a petty offence.
He would surely be convicted-there was no doubt about it. After all, her husband had shot a leading politician known for his generosity and character, in his house, that too in the presence of his wife. Her lawyer, with an already defeated air, informed her that he faced seven years of rigorous imprisonment for murder… Unless. Unless the sole eye witness to the incident changed her testimony.
She watched the dead man’s wife carefully as she approached the witness stand. And then it happened. “I’ve never seen this man before,” she said, staring at the man opposite to her, in a clear voice. The Wife wondered why she did it.
The woman smiled imperceptibly. With all eyes on her, she self-consciously touched the long red scar on her otherwise perfect face. A gift from her late husband--one of several. There won’t be any more scars, she thought.
