Down the road in Ridge there's currently a 2,000 acre fire in the pine barrens, near where I took
these pictures. It was surreal driving home this evening, glimpsing pale smoke towering into the sky. Not the sort of thing I'm used to seeing in this part of the country. Though really, it's the pine barrens. They need fire to grow and reproduce and to cut back all the undergrowth. People shouldn't be surprised, especially since fire suppression only creates more fuel for bigger fires later on.
While I love all life on this planet, I wouldn't be too upset if this burned up some ticks in those woods. I worked near this fire for a couple of months doing an archaeological survey in the woods. Picking dozens or hundreds of ticks off your legs and shirt every day? I can do without experiencing that a second time, thanks.
