Marie’s voice caught in her throat. It was a long moment before she could reply, the words coming out barely above the level of a whisper.
“Happy New Year, John.”
His lips brushed against her ear, his hands tilting her head as he continued kissing down her neckline. Her grip tightened on the glass, scared that she might drop it. The champagne and John’s kisses were making her lightheaded. She swayed a little on her feet, leaning her body into his for support. He shifted one of his hands, his arm encircling her waist.
She moaned quietly as he captured her mouth again, unable to hold back. She sucked on his tongue as he pushed it past her lips, eliciting a groan from him. The hand around her waist lowered, coming to rest on her ass. Marie broke the kiss, spooked by his advances. She stayed within his embrace though, not quite trusting herself to be able to stay on her feet.
He stroked the side of her face, looking at her with obvious concern. “You okay?”
She gave him a shaky smile, her eyes dropping down to look at his tie. “Just a little, um, surprised. Wasn’t really expecting to see you here. Or to see you here and get kissed like… well, like that.”
He moved his hand to the small of her back, and she relaxed a little. He kissed her forehead, tugging lightly on her hair to get her to look up at him again.
“When I saw you weren’t here with anyone, figured I had to take the opportunity.” He paused, smirking. “Then again, I probably would have done it even if you had been here with someone.”
Marie blushed, rolling her eyes. “Always the gentleman.”
He leaned in to kiss her, but she moved to put her hand with the glass up between them. He raised an eyebrow, looking slightly offended.
“John-”
He sighed, nodding. “Yeah, yeah, I know. You can’t because Bobby’s waiting for you back home, right?”
She shook her head, her blush deepening. “No, I just…” She glanced around, trying to gather her thoughts. “I’m still getting used to the idea of you in a suit and tie.”
He gave her a look that told her he didn’t believe her, but a moment later it was replaced by his familiar smirk. “You could always get used to the idea of me out of a suit and tie.”
Marie bit her lip, heat rushing through her as images of undressing John filled her mind. She broke eye contact again as she took a shaky breath. Within half an hour of him coming back into her life, she was becoming less sure of herself.
He cleared his throat, raking a hand through his short hair. “It’s okay, Roguey, I won’t push you.”
She looked up, once again surprised at his behaviour. “Marie.”
His brow creased. “What?”
She shrugged. “My name is Marie.”
“You always looked more like an ‘Isabel’ to me.” He shrugged at her look, choosing not to explain. “So, Marie, can I have your phone number?”
She stared at him before slowly nodding. “You got a pen?”
He looked at her amused, then gestured to the space around them. “We’re in an office in case you hadn’t noticed.”
She wondered whether it was possible for her to blush even more, and judging by John’s chuckle, it was. She eased out of his hold, handing him the champagne glass as she walked over to a nearby desk and searched for a pen and paper. She thought she could feel his keen blue eyes watching every movement, and again a wave of heat rolled through her. The pen felt strange in her hand, the complete normalcy of the moment hitting her. She put down her number, wondering for a long moment whether she should put her name down too. But it wasn’t like her and John were strangers, no matter how much it felt like it right now.
She handed him the folded piece of paper, doubt starting to gnaw at her. “Are you really going to call me?”
He chuckled quietly, tucking the paper into his jacket pocket. “Why? You think I just ask the phone number of every formerly mutant girl I meet?”
She smiled, shrugging. “I don’t know, Johnny. You meet a lot of them?”
His amusement faded, his expression darkening. “You’d be surprised.” He placed a hand on her shoulder at her look of panic. “Don’t worry, none of them interest me. Yours is the only phone number I’ve ever asked for.”
She tried to get her smile back, but the change in his expression had killed off her joy. Instead she cleared her throat, glancing at her watch. “Guess I should think about going.”
He offered her his arm. “Let me walk you out.”
She looked at the offered arm; shock more than anything making her accept it. “I take back what I said before, you really are a gentleman when you want to be.”
He smirked and gave her wink. “I figure if I put in the hard work now, you’ll remember it. Makes my seducing you that much easier.”
The blush was back with a vengeance, and Marie cursed her fair skin. “Never was one for beating around the bush were you?”
He shook his head, hailing her a cab. He stood back on the curb, giving the vehicle room to pull up next to them.
She looked at him quizzically. “You must really want to get me into bed, huh?”
He didn’t answer, just held the door open for her. As she walked past to get in, he stole a quick kiss. She couldn’t help the grin that curved her lips as she sat in the back of the cab. The ride to her apartment was quick, and she was still grinning when she let herself in. The phone rang the moment she’d locked the door, and she rushed to grab it.
“Hello?”
“I said I’d call.”
