Thanks for this. I'm preparing to volunteer in a prison, in part because of the situations you describe. I found this article, "Mass Imprisonment: Long-Term Harm versus Short-Term Good," to also be moving.

Wow - that's a nice coincidence! Thanks for the article. Apart from the ineffectiveness of the system of incarceration, the amount of money being spent on the system is staggering as well. Good luck with your volunteer work. I would love to hear about your experience.
